UNBROKEN CIRCLE by James Wesley at the Old Opera House in Charles Town. March 15, 16, 17, 22, 23, 24, 2019.

The drama Unbroken Circle by James Wesley tells the story of a family dealing with some dark and unsavory issues. The patriarch has just passed away and on a hot Texas afternoon, three generations gather in the family home following the memorial service. Over the next 24 hours, issues that have been buried and kept secret are revealed putting the family in turmoil and their love for one another to the test. Some of the issues are recent, some have been buried for almost a generation, but unless they are exposed and confronted the circle of pain and deception will continue. Unbroken Circle deals with how the distasteful sins of the father can affect generation after generation. While exposing these issues, James Wesley, uses a touch of humor and plenty of love, to keep this family from coming apart at the seams.

As the Old Opera House prepares for the opening of the adult drama UNBROKEN CIRCLE we would like to draw attention to all the good works being done by our friends at the Eastern Panhandle Empowerment Center (formerly the Shenandoah Women's Center.)

After the death of a family's patriarch, several long-hidden and unsavory secrets come to the surface in this drama by James Wesley. The secrets could destroy this Texas family, but their unwavering love for one another binds them together. The Eastern Panhandle Empowerment Center works to ensure that the circle is broken and families are not continually subjected to these issues, generation after generation. You can help today by making a donation to the Eastern Panhandle Empowerment Center (see donation button below)

You also do not want to miss UNBROKEN CIRCLE opening March 15.

AUDITIONS for the musical DISASTER!

Sunday, February 10 at 6:00pm
Tuesday, February 12 at 7:00pm

A musical written by Seth Rudetsky & Jack Plotnick
Directed by David Porterfield
Musical Direction by Alison Shafer
Choreographed by Ed Conn

Please prepare an upbeat Broadway-style show tune or pop song from the 1970s to sing. Bring sheet music, an accompanist will be provided and be prepared for a simple dance audition.

Disaster! is a new musical featuring some of the most unforgettable songs of the 1970s! Knock on Wood, Hooked on a Feeling, Sky High, I Am Woman and Hot Stuff are just a few of the hits in this hilarious musical comedy!

It’s 1979, and New York’s hottest A-listers are lining up for the opening of a floating casino and discotheque. Also attending is a faded disco star, a sexy nightclub singer with her eleven-year-old twins, a disaster expert, a feminist reporter, an older couple with a secret, a pair of young guys who are looking for ladies, an untrustworthy businessman, and a nun with a gambling addiction. What begins as a night of boogie fever quickly changes to panic as the ship succumbs to multiple disasters, such as earthquakes, tidal waves, and infernos. Disaster! will have you dancing in your seats and rolling in the aisles!

The script is available to read (at no cost) on the Music Theatre International webpage: https://www.mtishows.com/…/proceed-at-your-own-risk-free-sc…

This musical will be presented on the Old Opera House stage on April 26, 27, 28, May 2, 3, 4, 5, 2019.

10/22/2018

Following the lead of 2017’s new lighting system, The Old Opera House has completed two additional West Virginia Division of Culture and History Cultural Facilities and Capital Resources grants. You may have noticed some new speakers along the sides of the theatre, but there has been an immense amount of work behind the scenes to allow the OOH to continue to provide a home for the arts in the Eastern Panhandle.

The first grant focused on improving the sound, video and rigging systems to match the work already done on the lighting system. 16 new speakers were added to the theater to allow for immersive sound effects and being able to more clearly understand the stage dialogue. 14 new backstage speakers allow cast and production team to hear the show when not in the auditorium. New computer sound control is letting more microphones be used and is helping to engage a new generation of volunteers in the world of sound.

Newly installed video systems are allowing patrons to see the show in real time in the lobby and is allowing the tech crews to clearly see the stage during dark scene changes for increased safety. Interfaces with web streaming allowed a live stream of the first Charles Town State of the City address for remote viewing.

Over stage rigging systems were inspected and repaired following the latest safety standards. 8 new curtains battens were added and hours of work were performed to make sure the rigging system is ready for many more years of dependable service. Dry-rotted and damaged stage drapes were removed and new masking legs and borders now fill the theatre.

Lastly, the Scene Shop renovation began years ago was completed with new tool storage, new battery power tools, dust collection, and a new table saw. Besides providing for improved volunteer experiences, the new table saw has a safety device that will stop the blade immediately if touched to prevent one of the most common power tool injuries
.
And while all this (and more) was happening, the OOH was also able to complete an additional FastTrack Grant focused on patron accessibility. This grant was able to use the new sound system to add two Assisted Listening systems to the theatre- a wireless version with receivers that can be checked out at the Box Office and Wi-Fi version that will work with a phone app to allow patrons to bring their own device. Both these systems allow patrons to better hear and understand the dialogue and songs.

Automatic door openers were added to a pair of the front lobby doors, along with push button stations, and a new ADA compliant door was installed to replace the Liberty Street auditorium entrance to allow for barrier-free patron accessibility.
There are so many exciting things happening at the Old Opera House. Besides being one of the busiest community theatres in West Virginia, it is now one of the most technologically advanced in one of the oldest WV theatres! All this work will help guarantee a long and meaningful future for the arts in the Eastern Panhandle and a positive, and safe, experience for our volunteers, artists, and patrons.

And we’ve already been honored to be awarded an additional WVDCH CF&CR Grant for 2019- our third year in a row! We could tell you all about it, but why don’t you stop in and see the changes yourself! And wait until you see what we have planned for 2020.
