CanticaNOVA Publications Traditional Music for the Contemporary Church

CanticaNOVA Publications (CNP) provides quality liturgical music for today's Catholic Church. CNP believes that the texts and rites of Catholic liturgy give ample sources for creative musical expression. Using what the Church has already given us, CNP publishes quality music grounded in, and often directly flowing from, the traditions of the Church. This "NEW traditional music" provides the Catholic musician with the ability to be creative in liturgical music planning without having to turn to poor quality, "alternative" religious music.

Mission: Quality liturgical music - traditional in style - orthodox in substance.

What do you do in a church music program with the dedicated boy trebles as the approach puberty? Here's a thought: http://www.canticanova.com/articles/misc/art7ei1.htm

The Saint Gregory Choir is a boys' choir at Saint James Catholic Church in Charles Town WV. When a few of the boys started singing an octave below pitch, I came upon an unusual situation. Prior to this, when a boy's voice began changing, he became self-conscious and dropped out of the choral program...

Last Sunday I was away from home; this normally means trouble. It means I do not attend Mass at the chapel of Saint Thomas More College, which is where I teach, nor at Northeast Catholic College, which is in the town where we live. It means I must hear Mass, or have Mass drummed into my ears, somewh...

Advent in the Church, by Rev. Guy Selvester: http://www.canticanova.com/articles/xmas/art1j1.htm

It seems a relatively safe assumption that anyone even remotely connected with the Church has heard of Advent. However, it is an equally safe assumption, unfortunately, that most people do not really understand what this season is about. Squeezed as it is in between various holidays in a "holiday se...

GREAT DEAL on the 1990 Gregorian Missal ==
CNP offers the current 2012 edition of the Gregorian Missal from Solesmes, which has the new English (non-singing) translations of the Mass and the Propers [See http://www.canticanova.com/catalog/products/g_greg_missal.htm ]. October 7 [Memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary] falls on a Sunday in 2018. Although not celebrated liturgically, it might be a good day to program a Marian concert centered on the Rosary. See this article for ideas: http://www.canticanova.com/articles/misc/art7ec1.htm

Several years ago we posted an article about a A Rosary Concert by Dr. Gregory Hamilton, using a "decade of Ave Marias." Since then, many people have used that idea in their own parishes, including an ecumenical concert by Jane Errera in Bethlehem, PA. In honor of the 100th anniversary of the appari...

Priests (and music directors assisting priests):
To assist you in singing the three Orations for Mass (Collect, Prayer over the Offerings, Prayer after Communion), all the CNP planning pages contain these texts "pointed" according to the Solemn Tone of the new Missal (the easier of the two tones). The pointing can be penciled in your sanctuary Missal, or these pages can be used to practice the chanting in preparation for Mass. For more information on using this new feature, please see the article O-rational Thinking [ http://www.canticanova.com/articles/feedback/artebz1.htm ]

CNP Articles - Lenten Organ Music 2014

As we approach the sacred season of Lent, and judging from comments and posts in various web groups, it is perhaps appropriate to reiterate the exact rubric from The Roman Missal concerning organ music during Lent: "During Lent, it is not permitted to decorate the altar with flowers, and the use of musical instruments is allowed only so as to support the singing. Nevertheless, Laetare Sunday (the Fourth Sunday of Lent), Solemnities and Feasts are exceptions to this rule." [Lent, rubric #4]
