In New Christian teachings, entering heaven is not determined solely by one’s outward actions or being “good” in a worldly sense, but by the quality of one’s love and intentions—whether these are in harmony with Divine truth and goodness.

In the Bible, Jesus speaks of eternal life given to those who do good, such as in Matthew 25, where the parable of the sheep and goats teaches about the importance of loving one’s neighbor through acts of kindness (Matthew 25:34-40). However, New Christian doctrine clarifies that true goodness is good when it is done from love to the Lord and love toward the neighbor, not just for personal gain or reputation.

Swedenborg’s Writings explain that everyone who lives a life of goodwill according to their faith—whether Christian or not—can be accepted into heaven, because the Lord’s mercy reaches all who sincerely seek to live a good life according to their understanding (Heaven and Hell 318, 319). In essence, it is the inward life—the loves, intentions, and acknowledgment of God—that is decisive. Doing good because it originates from love of what is true and good aligns a person with heaven (Heaven and Hell 30, 528).

So, being “good” is indeed essential, but it is an inward, spiritual goodness—rooted in loving others and acknowledging the Lord—that opens the way to heaven.
