“We only surrender to the level that we can still have control.”
Whew. Jordan Rawls. 😮💨
After everything we’ve talked about this week—career, money, retirement, trusting God and taking big steps of faith—Jordan said something I think we needed to hear:
There are levels to this.
This wasn’t:
“I woke up one morning, emptied the 401(k), quit my job and decided to trust God.”
Nah.
Jordan said:
“Your faith muscles ain’t built up yet.”
Because before the big surrender came years of smaller ones.
Getting up and surrendering the frustration with his job.
Sitting in the discomfort.
Having difficult conversations with his wife.
Questioning decisions he’d made years earlier.
Learning to trust God in steps.
Jordan traces this wrestling all the way back to choosing his college major and entering a career he now believes wasn’t God’s best for him.
Twelve years of discomfort.
Three years since our first conversation about some of this.
And now we’re seeing a man willing to make decisions that might look extreme if you only see the ending and don’t know the training that came before it.
That’s the part that hit me.
We can look at somebody else’s step of faith and try to imitate the step without understanding the years God used to develop their trust.
Maybe surrender isn’t always one giant moment.
Maybe it’s a muscle.
And maybe today’s small “yes” is preparing you for a surrender you couldn’t carry yet.
