SIXTY YEARS AGO!
On March 22, 1963 in the United Kingdom, Parlophone Records (part of EMI) issued the very first album by a young, exciting pop quartet from the port city of Liverpool, called the Beatles. Bearing the cumbersome title “Please Please Me With Love Me Do And 12 Other Songs”, the album galvanized a growing, passionate fan base, adding energy to what was quickly becoming the global phenomenon known as Beatlemania.
The album “Please Please Me”, as it is always is referred to, was a collection of fourteen songs. Among the fourteen were both sides of the Beatles' debut single, “Love Me Do”, and it’s b-side “P.S. I Love You”, which was issued on October 5, 1962 in the U.K. Also present were both sides of their second single, “Please Please Me”, and "Ask Me Why”, which was released on January 11, 1963. The remaining ten songs were all recorded in one day at EMI Studios on February 11, 1963. The album combined eight original songs written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney with six covers. Of course, the sessions were produced by George Martin and engineered by Norman Smith.
