More Fuel Is On The Way
Dear Friend,
The disruption in fuel delivery due to the recent cyber-attack on Colonial Pipeline has spread worry and panic across the Eastern United States. This momentary crisis has made clear the need for mandatory cybersecurity standards for our energy systems, especially for the millions of miles of pipeline which currently lack such standards. That is why today, I led the North Carolina Democratic delegation in a letter to congressional leadership requesting a full investigation into the May 7th cyberattack on Colonial Pipeline, and calling for the inclusion of these standards in the upcoming infrastructure package.
Regarding the recent fuel shortage: Federal, state and local governments and Colonial Pipeline are working closing to restart the flow of fuel to the district. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm has been in communication with Colonial Pipeline officials who initiated the restart of pipeline operations today at approximately 5 p.m. ET.
According to Colonial Pipeline, they have delivered approximately 41 million gallons to various delivery points along their system. This includes delivery to distribution points in Charlotte, Greensboro, N.C., Atlanta, Ga., Belton and Spartanburg, S.C., Baltimore, Md. and Woodbury and Linden N.J. With the restart initiated today, they have another 84 million gallons ready to send through the system.
As the restart continues, there may be intermittent service interruptions, but we’ve been assured that Colonial Pipeline will move as much gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel as is safely possible, until we are back to normal.
AAA Carolinas is continuing to monitor fuel availability. Tiffany Wright, Director of Public Affairs reports, “Relief is on the way and since the Carolinas have the most shortages in the country - we are definitely a priority.”
We urge against panic-buying of gasoline; more fuel is coming.
To help citizens, while fuel supplies return to normal, CATS is providing fare-free transit for all community members to assist citizens with access to essential workplaces. An announcement will be made prior to resuming fare collection.
Once again, we are all in this together. Let’s look out for each other.
Sincerely,
Congresswoman Alma S. Adams, Ph.D.
Fuel Saving Tips from AAA:
Plan ahead to accomplish multiple errands in one trip, and whenever possible avoid high-traffic times of day.
If you own more than one car, use the most fuel-efficient model that meets the needs of any given journey.
Remove unnecessary and bulky items from your car. Minimize your use of roof racks and remove special carriers when not in use. It takes more fuel to accelerate a heavier car, and the reduction in fuel economy is greater for small cars than for larger models.
Minimize your use of air conditioning. Even at highway speeds, open windows have less effect of fuel economy than the engine power required to operate the air conditioning compressor.
In hot weather, park in the shade or use a windshield sunscreen to lessen heat buildup inside the car. This reduces the need for air conditioning (and thus fuel) to cool down the car.
"Remember to wear your mask, keep your distance, wash your hands and get the vaccine."
