Preparing the African melon seed (egusi) soup my way. Ingredients : Any type of meat and fish you eat, grounded melon seeds, stock fish, crayfish, a table spoon of salt to taste, two cubes of knorr cubes, a ball of half sized onion, fresh or dried hot pepper, a teaspoon of dried grounded locust bean, fluted pumpkin leaves also known as telfairia occidentalis and palm oil.

With what is going on in families today and as a child who grew up without my mom, I write this letter to my dad who will always be my mentor and hero.

A LETTER TO MY FATHER

Dearest father of inestimable value,
Where are you?
I keep searching everywhere for you without success.
I asked around for your whereabouts,
But no one seem to have seen you
Or know where you are.
Did you get lost and never knew your way back?
For many years, I waited for your return,
In my wait for you, I had a dream
A dream that seems so real.
In my dream I found you and
I was so glad I found you
I don’t think I can live without you
Live without you because the world is lonely
The world is full of agonies and bitterness
The world is full of deaths caused by humans
But still in my dream, I found you.
When I tried to hug you,
Having missed you so much,
You ran away from me.
I chased you everywhere,
But you kept running and I screamed
Daddy!!!, please come back to me
While screaming your name,
I woke up.
I woke up not because I wanted to
I never want to wake up because
I found you
I woke up with lots of thoughts in my mind.
The thoughts like
You never said you were leaving
You never said goodbye.
You were gone before I knew it
Your absence in our home,
Has created a big vacuum in our lives
A vacuum that no one can fill,
Your leaving created a big hole in my heart
Because I loved you dearly.
No one can ever take your place in my life
You have always been there for me and my siblings
As a child, you were all I know
You filled the gap of a mom and a dad
Oh, my father
You are my inspiration,
You are my mentor
It broke my heart to lose you,
You didn’t go alone
As part of me went with you the day God took you
And only God knows why he took you from me
My ever dependable and irreplaceable father,
The memories we shared, will ever remain fresh.
My dearest father,
I am waiting for that day
That day we will meet to part no more.
Your words to me have kept me going
For these fifteen years you left me,
I have been living on your words and teachings
Oh, how I miss you dearly
Every thought of the moment we shared,
Brings tears to my eyes
And I miss you more.
Missing you gave me the courage
To write you this letter
A letter that is specially written for you
To let you know that I still love you even at death
In my next existence,
You will always be my father.
