"So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets." Matthew 7:12 (also in Luke 6:31). Thankfully, Jesus shared this ethical truth in a positive/prescriptive form. In most other religions, the Silver Rule was used - expressed in a negative/reactive form: “Do not do unto others what you would not have them do unto you.” Comparing and contrasting the two, the Golden Rule is proactive in doing good, being kind, generous and respectful, whereas the Silver Rule is protective in avoiding harm and does not necessarily require positive activity.
