Farm house in Crouse needs some love... $449,000

Beautiful farmhouse with so much character. The spacious 1.7 acre rural setting has much room for many outdoor possibilities. There is a barn, chicken house and many other storage structures on site. Step inside to see large rooms adorn the main living level. Each bedroom has a fireplace for that cozy ambiance but for aesthetic purposes only. The primary bedroom has it's own office space/flex space adjacent to it. Some updates have been done by the previous owner including one full bathroom. Upstairs is a unique space with wood walls preserved from the early era of this beauty. The upper level is not heated/cooled but there is more possibility to expand the living space here. There is a walk in crawl space area. This area of Crouse is outside the buffer zone of the proposed Piedmont Lithium plant area.

Retired dye plant in Lowell to be redeveloped!

Situated at 1602 North Main Street Lowell, NC is a retired dye plant that has not been in operation since 2004. This property has been an eyesore to the community since the former dye plant shut its doors.

This 17.02 acre site boasts over 850 feet of frontage along the South Fork River and has over 25 abandoned structures from the previous dye plant. Residential neighborhoods are the predominant adjacent land uses, as well as Gaston County’s Poston Park to the north.

The architecture firm, Creech and Associates was selected in August of 2021 to perform the conceptual master plan for this site. This process involved a high-level rendering of what amenities and layout of the site could look like. The planned redevelopment of this site would include: a new location for the City’s Public Works Facility and many recreational amenities such as:

🏞 Connection to the Carolina Thread Trail
🏞 Outdoor classrooms
🏞 Multiple playgrounds
🏞 Amphitheater
🏞 Fishing pier
🏞 Kayak launch
🏞 Banquet hall
🏞 Picnic shelters
🏞 Volleyball courts
🏞 Walking paths
🏞 Obstacle courses, and more!

Steps forward will include citizen input on the amenities that may be offered at this site, a brownfield steering committee, and developing a plan to phase the project.

The City has also utilized over 50 historical environmental reports from the property owner to determine the risk associated with this property. The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) has been very active remediating the site over the past several years. The City of Lowell applied for a Brownfield Agreement with NCDEQ in order to bring this property back to life for a different use. The City of Lowell subsequently received a Letter of Eligibility (LOE) into the Brownfield program on November 16, 2021.

22 States raised the minimum wage yesterday - NC isn't one of them

22 states minimum wage increased yesterday, and three more will raise minimum pay rates later in the year. North Carolina is not one of them.

Some cities and counties are mandating even higher rates; Denver rates are $18.29 per hour, and in Tukwila Washington, large employers must pay $20.29 per hour.

North Carolina remains at $7.25 for non-tipped employees and $2.13 for tipped employees. The federal minimum wage of $7.25 was established in 2009 and hasn't risen since. If that number had kept pace with inflation, that number would now be over $22.

At the current North Carolina minimum wage of $7.25 an hour, a full-time minimum-wage worker earns approximately $15,080 per year. This is approximately $1,000 less than the federal poverty level for 2016 for a family of one adult and one child, and more than $18,000 less than what it truly takes to make ends meet according to the Living Income Standard.

Looks like Loray Mill Phase II is a go!

For the last 121 years, the elevated windows on the west side of Loray Mill have offered striking views of Crowder's Mountain and Kings Pinnacle. Now, it appears that folks will get to enjoy those views again.

We are hearing that Phase II of Loray Mill will move forward, with the redevelopment of the western part of the mill that has sat idle for years. The plan will create 196 new units in the mill itself. Originally, the plan called for developing 24 cottages along South Vance Street as well, but that appears uncertain at this point.

Packers 33, Panthers 30

Panthers brought the fight, but to no avail

The Panthers lost a close one on Sunday. The Packers kicked a field goal with 19 seconds left to go ahead 33-30. Bryce Young and company completed two passes of 22 yards to get to the 31 yard line (where they could have kicked a field goal for the win) But they were out of time outs, and time ran out. Very frustrating and disappointing.

Sunday was better, even though we lost.

*QB Bryce Young ended the day with 23 of 36, 312 yards and 2 touchdowns.

*Wide Receiver Adam Thielen was 6 for 94 yards.

*Wide receiver DJ Clark Jr. was 6 for 98, and 2 touchdowns.

The Panthers play the Jacksonville Jaguars next Sunday at 1 PM in Jacksonville.

Santa Claus is coming to town -- with a new kidney!!

For the past 23 years, Joe Greene has portrayed Santa Claus at his and wife Anna’s flea market in Gaston County, N.C. It’s one of Joe’s most treasured times of year. “That’s just what’s in my heart is to make people happy,” Joe says.

Joe was taken aback in 2019 to learn one of his kidneys was failing. He met with physicians at Atrium Health, who prescribed a care plan while awaiting a kidney.

This past April, Joe’s wish for a new kidney was granted: A family friend, Heather Phillips, had been discreetly undergoing tests to see if she was a match – and she was!

“You never think you’re going to operate on Santa Claus, but we are excited that we are able to help him get back to feeling better to share his joy with the world,” says Dr. Roger Denny.

They are happy to share that Joe is feeling healthy and making children’s spirits bright again, appearing as Santa leading up to Christmas, just months after his surgery!

These sweet, easy-to-make Christmas cookies start with one dough that can then be turned into three different recipes. How great is that?

You can dress up this basic recipe for Slice-and-Bake Shortbread Cookies with all sorts of delicious additions. Choose one flavor variation—Chocolate-Sea salt, Fruit-and-Nut, or Lemon—and follow the additional instructions below the main recipe. Of course, all three are delicious, but if you plan to make all of them, you will need to triple the base recipe to have enough dough

Gaston County program rehabbing homes for the needy

More than 100 homes have gotten help, according to Marc Bolick, Program Manager for Gaston County's Housing Rehab Program.

“The need is great. We always have more requests than we do funds to answer those requests. We’ll probably get 100 applications for one grant,” said Bolick, “There are a lot of houses that were built in the 1950’s, 60’s, 70’s. There’s lead, asbestos, radon issues, and such in some of them. You have some environmental issues. we do a lot of roofs, floors, structural, water, sewer, electrical,” he explained. “We have spent well over $2 million and rehabbed over 100 homes here in Gaston County,” Bolick said.

“Any time we can allow that homeowner to remain in their home it saves everyone. It allows them to stay in their home safely and with dignity, but it also has a direct savings to Medicare and Medicaid costs on the bottom line,” he said.

No, that's not a garbage truck pictured above. Actually, it's part of the mail sorting equipment at the new USPS facility in Gateway85 in Gaston County.

The new facility is actually a prototype; one of a handful around the country. They all have the very latest in technology. “The machines have the capability... they have 360 cameras on them, so they have the ability to see the package from all angles.” said plant manager Margret Ford. “It’s super-exciting to be here with what this new technology brings for us.”

When the facility reaches full operation, it will be able to handle three quarters of a million pieces of mail per day.

River District moving ahead!

We have told you several times over the last year about the River District project, which will be just adjacent to Gaston County, near the Catawba River and the Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

Plans to try to attract the Western & Southern tennis tournament to a new facility that was to be built in the River District fell through when the tournament decided to stay put. Regardless, the project is moving ahead.

Crescent Communities announced in September that they had appointed Rainer Fi**en to oversee the 1400-acre project. The first phase- called Westrow-, is progressing with construction of utilities and infrastructure.

The master plan for the River District calls for 8 million square feet of total commercial space, 5,000 homes and apartments, 1,000 hotel rooms, and hundreds of acres of park and green space along the Catawba River. It is expected that the project will be developed in many phases over the course of decades.

Downtown Belmont could expand with 15 acres, including a new street area, which would effectively double Belmont's downtown if a new plan goes through.

The Stowe family has plans to sell a 10 acre plot behind businesses on Main Street. Unless you have been in a coma, you know that Belmont is blowing up. The plan includes mixed use, residential, civic, and existing buildings, as well as underground parking. You can see more of the plan at The Congress for New Urbansim. The buildings will be 2 to 4 stories in height, in keeping with the historic downtown.

The Stowe family worked with local business owners and an architect to come up with the plan. This was done in advance of the property being sold, and it will ultimately be up to the new owner and the city as to what actually happens with the property.

The plan was done by Historical Concepts and won an award from the Congress for New Urbanism. The Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU) helps create vibrant and walkable cities, towns, and neighborhoods where people have diverse choices for how they live, work, shop, and get around. People want to live in well-designed places that are unique and authentic. CNU's mission is to help build those places.

Gastonia Families! Do you love adventure? If so, we need you! Our 2024 exchange students are ready to be placed with volunteer host families like yours! They arrive in August, but we need to set up placements now because the area schools fill fast! This is an opportunity for a great adventure!
If a school year or semester is something you can not commit to, can you be a Welcome Family and host a student for up 8-12 weeks? This allows them to arrive in the US, enroll in school, and start sports. By being a host family, you are helping a student begin the journey of fulfilling their dream.
Who will fit best with your family?

👧Marie from Germany, age 16, likes cooking, travel, basketball, soccer, volleyball, watching sports, and dance. Marie hopes to study law or medicine when she finishes school, and she loves everything about Christmas.

👧Lucia from Spain: age 15, she loves animals and hopes to be a vet when she finishes college. Additionally, she enjoys track and field, basketball, reading, swimming, and soccer. She also goes to church regularly.

👧Kami from Germany, age 15, she hopes to find a host home in the southeast region. Kami likes pets, Dance*/Modern Dance, swimming, climbing, skiing, and cooking. Her father is French and she speaks 4 languages!! She is only here for the first semester.

📧 You can reach out for more info about hosting one of these kids, or we can look at other available students.
You can email [email protected]

*** Did you know that hosting qualifies your own teen for a scholarship to go on a short-term exchange to Germany or Spain in summer 2025? ***
