Many plastic surgeons, dermatologists, & medspa owners are selling to private equity firms & it is changing the landscape of our industry. This doesn’t necessarily mean that the change is for the better.
Over the last 5 years, I have seen many physicians who have given their everything to build a successful practice, brand, & have a huge patient base to then in turn sell to private equity. Some of the private equity firms tell you that NOTHING will change. Some will tell you that they will change EVERYTHING. Some of these firms have ZERO knowledge about our industry. DO NOT Sell to these firms. These firms are what I call selling your soul (your whole entire business) to the devil 👿 All money 💰 is NOT good money 💰
You also no longer have protection as a physician so you may end up being thrown in the reduction in force pile. Contract negotiations are HUGE when considering selling or not.
Some on the other hand are owned & operated by your colleagues & have your best interest at heart. They will assist in growth, development, lean into you as a physician, & grow your business. These are what you need to look for if you are looking to grow your practice & know that when you retire or sell completely, your practice will still carry the same reputation you have built & loved for many years.
🙋🏻♀️What does this mean for you as a patient?
As we see private equity firms purchase more practices & medspas patient care is going down the toilet 🚽. You are no longer a patient, you are a number. We see this in big box plastic surgery & dermatology practices as well. And when this happens, you can feel it and see it. Many system changes, disorganization, rescheduling nightmares, white glove service is completely gone.
To avoid frustration, it’s important to talk to a consultant or ask the questions to the practices you are seeking, to find out if you are a real patient that is valued as such or just a number that will be overlooked, mistreated, & misguided.
