Over the years, plastic/cosmetic surgery consent forms have gotten more descriptive & informative which goes over everything from risks, benefits, revision policy, financial policy, etc.
Plastic/Cosmetic procedures are commonly elective procedures. You are signing that you are electively choosing to have this done & you understand the risks, alternatives, & expectations.
Plastic/cosmetic surgeons discuss these things during your consultation & during your preop. The reasons the consent forms are so thorough are-
⭐️ In plastic surgery, outcomes are subjective and aesthetic — what looks “good” to one person may not to another.
⭐️ Patients are more likely to pursue legal action after aesthetic procedures due to dissatisfaction with results rather than medical negligence.
⭐️ A strong, well-worded consent form helps protect the provider by documenting that the patient was educated about possible complications, recovery expectations, and limitations.
⭐️ Consent forms are a critical part of aligning patient expectations with realistic results before surgery.
⭐️ Plastic surgery consents go deeper into risks such as asymmetry, scarring, contour irregularities, sensation changes, or need for revision — details that hospital forms often summarize in general medical language.
⭐️ Many aesthetic practices include nurses, physician assistants, or even non-medical providers for injectables or pre/post-op care.
⭐️The consent form clarifies who is performing what, and the scope of their role, which is crucial for compliance and liability protection.
⭐️Comprehensive consents reinforce professionalism, transparency, and ethics — helping maintain patient trust and reducing the chance of disputes.
So before you move forward with ANY elective procedure, read your consents & if they do NOT cover what I just listed, then cancel. Just remember an informed consent covers you as the patient, the practice, & the surgeon.
