Daniel Brooks had always been good at letting go.
At least, that’s what he told himself.
He moved on from places, from jobs, from people—like chapters in a book he had already finished reading. He never lingered too long, never allowed himself to become too attached. Life, in his eyes, was easier that way.
Simple. Controlled. Safe.
Until the night he met her.
---
It was at a crowded rooftop party in Chicago, the kind filled with strangers pretending to belong. Daniel had only gone because his friend insisted. He stood near the edge, staring out at the city lights, thinking about how quickly he could leave without anyone noticing.
“Not a fan of parties either?”
The voice was soft, but it carried something—curiosity, maybe.
Daniel turned.
Her name was Lily.
She wasn’t trying to impress anyone. No loud laughter, no forced conversations. Just quiet confidence, standing beside him like she had been there all along.
“Is it that obvious?” Daniel smirked.
“A little,” she said, smiling.
That smile stayed with him.
---
Their connection wasn’t loud or dramatic.
It was… effortless.
They talked for hours that night—about everything and nothing. About dreams they never chased, fears they never shared, memories that still lingered longer than they should.
With Lily, Daniel didn’t feel the need to hold back.
And that scared him.
