An Introspection on the Road to Fifty: The Hymns of the Church
Although I am an avid supporter of traditional gospel music, the choir music of 70s, 80s, 90s, and early 2000s, some CCM, and even some genres of contemporary gospel, there is nothing like a .
I grew up in a hymn-singing culture, therefore hymns are very much a part of my formation and foundation. Yet, they mean so much more now. Much of that is maturation and experience, but it is also theological and somewhat intellectual.
My pastoral theology professor Dr. Doug Dickens at Gardner-Webb University School of Divinity said it best some years ago. He told us, "The hymns provide the theology of the church." In other words they provide a theogical framework for what we believe and the lyrics give us intectual depth to convey what we believe.
Long live the hymns of the church!
