What started as a quick design exercise turned into a passion project. What’s your favorite album? And which design stood out to you the most?

“private music” has been on repeat nonstop for me this week, definitely in my Top 5 albums of the year and may very well be my favorite Deftones album. With every listen it feels like there’s something new to discover. One of those things I discovered is that this is actually my first time experiencing a Deftones album rollout as a fan. I was *extremely* late to the party with this band. Despite growing up with so many of their contemporaries, I completely missed out on Deftones. There was really no reason for this besides my tendency to have pretty intense mental blinders on when it comes to discovering new media. In 2020 I listened to “Ohms” a few months after it came out just because my homie posted about it. After being on a kick from other decades-overdue media discoveries (Dune, David Lynch, etc), I figured I’d finally give ‘em a try. Little did I know I had just discovered one of my all-time favorite bands.

There is something truly, deeply special about listening to an artist late in the game. I got to experience 30 years of a catalogue of some of the most dynamic and transcendental heavy music ever written, reshaping the way I feel and think about this ever-changing genre. With “private music” synthesizing the very best of all of it, needless to say I felt inspired.

I immediately fell in love with all the creative work surrounding “private music,” from the initial teasers to the album release. I especially loved the color variants of the album artwork introduced for the vinyl, which is what led me to this design experiment. After messing around with the “private music” design, I decided to go down a rabbit hole and see what I could do with the rest of their discography, communicating through design how each album made me feel, combined with elements of the band’s existing imagery, lore, and mystery.

This was such a fun experiment that pushed me to my limits as a designer, despite being relatively simple. I hope you like them! Maybe I’ll do this for another artist soon.
