SEVERE AUTISM

The other side of Tik I haven't shared before.

How would you have reacted?

Today was rough for Tik. He was overstimulated from the moment he woke up, and it showed in the way he hit everyone in the house throughout the day. By the time evening came, he smacked me really hard on my legs out of malice, but because he was agitated and overwhelmed, and I couldn't figure out what triggered it. When he's aggressive, recording is the last thing on my mind, because I'm focused on keeping everyone safe. But by the end of the day when he finally calmed down a bit, I pulled out the camera and managed to capture a moment of how rough he can get, it's never easy. But it's our reality and we take it one moment at a time.

ASD parents—celebrate this win with us! 👏🏼😊

​My son just mastered a brand new skill: sorting! I purposely mixed these two types of chips together to test him and see if he could tell the difference, and he absolutely crushed it.

​As my son grows into a young teenager, he is developing more skills than ever before. He grew up not being able to feed himself or use utensils. Now? He’s feeding himself finger foods and actively working on using utensils!

​Recently, he’s even learned not to just drop his juice pouches or soda cans anywhere. He’ll grab a drink, finish it, and understands exactly how to place it right back on the table.

​Parents, please have hope. Keep showing up, keep celebrating the wins, and continue to stimulate their brains every single day.

I’ve held off on posting this video because it means the world to me. Opening up my private life to the public is already uncomfortable, but my deepest fear was that my son, who has severe autism, would face hate or judgment. Instead, you all have looked at him and our family as an inspiration. The unexpected love and warmth from his followers truly melts my heart. Thank you so much for the incredible support.

The real struggles of Tik's birthday. It is like this every year. Dad is always wrestling him until we finish singing happy birthday. 😭We are waiting for the day when he is ready and get excited to blow out his candles. Happy 12th birthday, Tik! We love you so much.
