Everybody wants the exposure, but who’s committed to preserving the purpose of AAU?

Coach Jessica Carter discusses the current state of local AAU basketball, including too many teams, rising costs, players moving from program to program, a lack of chemistry and mentorship, and an overemphasis on parents and financial gain instead of player development.

She also addresses the lack of teaching surrounding plays, fundamentals, basketball IQ, team concepts, and coachability, along with the failure to properly prepare athletes for the demands of the next level.

When programs prioritize exposure, fees, and adult agendas over teaching and development, they lose sight of the true purpose of AAU: helping young athletes grow, compete, learn the game, build character, and prepare for what comes next.

The focus has to return to the players.

Coach Jessica Carter opens up about her experience at Mary Baldwin University, the challenges she faced as a player, and how those lessons shape her approach as a coach today. She also breaks down the “D1 or nothing” mentality, how social media can cloud an athlete’s judgment about what real work ethic looks like, and how the growth of AAU basketball has changed the path for young athletes.

With more teams and opportunities than ever, the game has become more accessible, but accessibility does not replace discipline, consistency, or development. Coach Carter reflects on a time when making the team meant proving you had the talent and work ethic to be there, and why athletes today still have to earn their growth beyond the likes, followers, and labels.

Sometimes the level isn’t the limit. The mindset is.
