We will be announcing the release of a new book soon!

Tune in tomorrow at 12PM to a A Lunchtime Discussion on American Experience’s The Vote!

Join WGBH, The City of Boston Mayor’s Office of Women’s Advancement, and American Experience as they co-present an important and timely conversation around the upcoming film The Vote!

Commemorating the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment, The Vote tells the dramatic culmination story of the hard-fought campaign waged by American women for the right to vote. The transformative cultural and political movement resulted in the largest expansion of voting rights in U.S. history. One hundred years later, we remember these unsung Black and white heroines and their unwavering courage as they battled controversies surrounding the role of women and race in society.

American Experience presents a panel of experts who will explore the history of the suffrage movement and look at the ways the fight for the vote by women has informed the social, political and cultural work that local community organizations, including Mass NOW, Boston NAACP and Suffrage100MA, are addressing today leading up to the 2020 election.

This event is hosted by Tina Cassidy, WGBH Chief Marketing Officer. Boston’s Mayor Martin J. Walsh will provide welcoming remarks. We will also share clips from the film. Guests are encouraged to ask questions and join the conversation.

Our panel includes:

🟣 Sasha Goodfriend, President of MA Chapter of the National Women’s Organization, Chair of Mass LGBTQ Youth Commission, and involved with Suffrage100MA

🟣 Martha Jones, Society of Black Alumni Presidential Professor and Professor of History at Johns Hopkins University and author of All Bound Up Together: The Woman Question in African American Public Culture 1830-1900 (2009) and Vanguard: How Black Women Broke Barriers, Won the Vote, and Insisted on Equality for All (2020).

🟣 Tanisha Sullivan, President of NAACP Boston

🟣 Callie Crossley, host of WGBH’s Under the Radar with Callie Crossley and Basic Black, and our event moderator

The two-part American Experience documentary The Vote premieres July 6 and 7 on WGBH2 at 9pm, and on local PBS stations across the country, PBS.org and the PBS Video App.

This event is produced in partnership with The City of Boston Mayor’s Office of Women’s Advancement.

This is a virtual event. After you register, you will receive a link you can use to join the virtual event on June 30, 2020. You will need to download the Zoom platform.

We are painfully aware that the suffrage movement over its 72+ year history included much anti-blackness despite the origins of the movement that began with dedicated abolitionists who became suffragists. #BlackLivesMatter. And our goal is to create a unified and inclusive commemoration so everyone learns all aspects of suffrage history. We hope that amplifying all of these stories will inspire everyone - men included - to appreciate and exercise their right to vote. Celebrate suffragist and pants-pioneer Amelia Bloomer’s birthday with us by sharing a selfie in your favorite pants and tag us @Suffrage100ma! The cartoon above was supposed to ridicule Bloomer’s new fashion trend - but the ladies look pretty trendy to us! After seeing women around her struggle with the restrictive nature of corsets and dresses, Bloomer advocated for women to wear ‘Bloomers’ or what we call pants today. While ridicule of this new attire prevailed in the 1800s, celebrate how far we’ve come (at least with respect to pants...) by showing off your favorite quarantine pants fashion selfie on social media to celebrate Amelia Bloomer’s birthday! Something's coming!

Something's coming!

On June 4, 1919 the Senate and thus Congress approved the amendment, sending it to the states for ratification. A little over a year later, on August 18, 1920 – by a one-vote margin – Tennessee became the 36th state to ratify the amendment, and it was added to the U.S. Constitution on August 26th, 1920. That incredible accomplishment was the result of thousands of women who sacrificed so much for so long, many of whom were women of color who did not get the recognition they deserved. Today, we stand on the shoulders of all the suffragists shoulders and continue to push for progress.#throwbackthursday #suffrage100ma #votesforwomen
