WHEN: Starting Thursday, August 27, 2020

WHERE: Old US-12 Road between Freer Road and Jackson Road in Lima Township

WHY: Preventative maintenance – fog seal

BACKGROUND: Starting Thursday, August 27, 2020, the Washtenaw County Road Commission (WCRC) will apply a fog seal on Old US-12 Road between Freer Road and Jackson Road in Lima Township.

Fog seal is another thin layer of liquid asphalt placed on top of a recent chip seal that helps to seal in the chips and further protect the pavement. This work will be conducted under lane restrictions and all vehicles must stay off the fog seal while it cures. Curing time depends on several factors including weather.

This work is expected to be completed by Monday, August 31. However, all dates are tentative and subject to change due to weather conditions.

Once the fog seal has been completed, WCRC’s contractor will return to place permanent pavement markings in the coming weeks.

A heat advisory has been issued for Washtenaw County until 8 a.m. Wednesday.
An excessive heat watch is in effect from Wednesday morning through Thursday evening.
Extreme heat and humidity will significantly increase the potential for heat related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities, or those
vulnerable to heat stress over several days.
High temperatures will once again exceed 90 degrees today, for the 6th day in a row and for the second day in a row with high humidity.
Scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms bring little relief as wet ground only adds to humidity while temperatures barely settle to lows around 70 tonight. This is followed by the peak of conditions Wednesday and Thursday with high temperatures in the mid -0s and heat index possibly exceeding 100.
The cumulative impact on heat health stress is expected to be considerable and could require an Excessive Heat Warning until a cold front moves into the area by Friday.
Monitor the latest forecasts and warnings for updates on this situation. Be prepared to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.
Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. This is especially true during warm or hot weather when car interiors can reach lethal
temperatures in a matter of minutes.

A reminder about several road projects. The Washtenaw County Road Commission will resurface Old US-12 between Kernwood/Fieldstone Drive and M-52 in Sylvan Township and the City of Chelsea beginning Tuesday, June 23.
Old US-12 will not be closed to traffic, but delays are likely due to lane restrictions. There will be intermittent sidewalk closures during this project as well.
The Old US-12 improvements are expected to take approximately 10 days. However, all dates are tentative and subject to change due to weather conditions.
The City of Chelsea is also conducting work on Wilkinson Street and Lane Street. Traffic congestion is expected in this area during construction of these three projects.
