The Lumbee should be embarrassed. They bullied their way into recognition, gutted federal standards, and sold out real tribal sovereignty for political favors under Trump.

Now states feel free to attack sovereignty outright. This is the cost of letting fake tribes cheat the system.

Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt reaffirmed calls to limit tribal sovereignty during his final State of the State address on Monday, dismaying tribal leaders in attendance.

Once again, we are watching the Lumbee attempt to manufacture legitimacy by rewriting history. For decades, the public explanation was clear: the language was lost.

Now, a newly constructed system built from colonial fragments, borrowed elements from other tribes’ languages, and modern interpretation is being promoted as “language revitalization.”

That is not what revitalization means. A language without speakers, continuity, or a complete record cannot be revived. Creating something new and presenting it as ancestral does not change that fact. It’s fabrication.

It’s misrepresentation and it is part of a broader pattern we have repeatedly documented.

We are calling on federally recognized tribes, language practitioners, and Indigenous leaders to pay attention. These narratives do not exist in isolation, and they have real consequences for Indigenous truth and sovereignty.

We are tired of correcting the same claims, but silence is not an option.
