A few weeks ago, I received a lead through my website from a home service company looking for help with a specific service I’m not experienced in. Even though I knew I couldn’t personally help, I still reached out to thank him for contacting me and to let him know I wouldn’t be the best fit.

I’ll admit, the thought of saying, “Sure, I can help,” and figuring it out along the way crossed my mind. It would’ve been good monthly recurring revenue. But if I went down that path and things didn’t turn out well (which was highly likely, since I’ve never done that type of work) he would’ve wasted money and ended up with zero results. I’d be left with an unhappy client and a damaged reputation.

So, I told him the truth. I explained that it’s not what I specialize in, but I was more than happy to recommend someone I trust who does great work in that specialty.

That moment reminded me that my word and my reputation will always be worth more than any amount of money.

I’d rather build a business on honesty and integrity than overpromise and underdeliver.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with turning down work, especially if it’s not in your scope. If you’re a roofer, you’re not going to accept an HVAC service for the sake of making more money.

SEO is one the best ways to practice your patience… 🤣

It took about 3 months for me to start showing up in AI search results, which is actually normal in SEO. Now, this is just 1 of about 50 web design- and SEO-related searches where I’m showing up in Google’s AI overview.

What’s even more mind blowing is that this was accomplished with $0 spent on fancy SEO tools, just pure strategy. It took countless late nights publishing content, updating and optimizing pages, and tweaking keywords to get results like this.

Consistency beats shortcuts every single time.

Referrals are powerful, but here’s the kickback:

1️⃣ Referrals still Google you and if nothing comes up (or looks outdated), trust is out the window.
2️⃣ Referrals only get you so far and won’t scale your business in the way new customers will.
