RE : Photo News Article--Jan. 15-Jan. 21 A Long Day in the Life of America,
As a registered Democrat, I take issue with the Orange County Democratic Committee Chairperson, Mr.Brett Broge's, press release of Jan. 6 calling on Assemblyman Colin J. Schmitt to resign his position.
Mr. Broge did not speak for me.
Approximately three hours after knowledge of the capitol riot, Mr. Broge demanded the resignation of Mr.Schmitt, a duly elected representative, because he met with his constituents on a bus headed for a rally/protest in Washington, DC, a privilege of free speech and assembly for US citizens.
WHY? He said he saw a photo in the Photo News of Assemblyman Schmitt greeting them. Based on this photo, he concluded - they were "rioters", "a busload of far right extremists", "prepared for sedition",and "ready to storm the Capitol", while accusing Mr.Schmitt of "validating the violent conspiracies of the far right supporters."
According to the Photo News, Broge did not know what the local residents did in Washington, nor did he have first hand knowledge of what Schmitt said on the bus.
Did Mr Broge SEE their guns and clubs, HEAR shouts of "Hang Pence, Get Pelosi", READ texts and emails inciting sedition, SPEAK to witnesses? NO! Yet, he released an inflammatory, divisive description of Mr. Schmitt and of our neighbors' intent and behavior.
Mr Brett Broge is not the authority as to who should or should not attend any specific rally. In my opinion, the potential for violence exists in most rallies/protests and people who choose to attend need to be aware .
What prompted the Orange County Democratic Committee Chairman to release such a statement based on fiction? Did he intend to calm or inflame? To unite or divide? Was it arrogance to demand the resignation of an elected representative who decided to meet with his constituents or was it dishonesty ?
I don't know.! I hope he does.

Disappointed in the photo news, we have had a group of kids accomplish a whole lot this summer. In the past they were great at putting a picture or a few kids names into our local paper. After 4-5 different stories sent in they have ignored them all, no response, no nothing, total silence. Yes, the world is different but these kids still have a childhood and a small memory and a name in a paper means something!!!! What happened to the photo news?
I am writing to request that The Photo News alert its viewers to an important story of local injustice concerning the firing of workers at Schweiger Dermatology in Monroe, NY. Schweiger Dermatology Group buys locally owned practices and assimilates them into its network of clinics throughout the tri-state area. In 2019, Schweiger purchased Orange Dermatology in Monroe, which had been operating in Orange County since 1973.
Many of your readers will be personally familiar with the long tenured workers who were quickly fired after serving for upwards of 30 years at Orange Dermatology. These workers were laid off in a template email from Schweiger's HR representatives. They include nine women over fifty years old. They include women who had worked at Orange Dermatology for 31 years, 30 years, 17 years, and 15 years. The manager of 34 years had already resigned after feeling demeaned and mistreated by the company prior to the Coronavirus outbreak.
The practice has been gutted after assurances from the providers and Schweiger Dermatology that the staff would be would retained. In the days after this wave of firings, Schweiger immediately posted ads for some of the same positions. Job postings for medical receptionists at Schweiger have sprouted up almost instantaneously in the aftermath of this wave of firing - postings for the very same positions these workers had filled with salaries they had earned over years of raises due to loyalty and hard work.
Your readers can expect a vastly different experience when they return one of the most popular dermatology clinics in the county. They will notice many missing faces.
The workers want to tell you their stories. How it feels to be let go after a lifetime of service without even the decency of personalized contact. How it feels to receive a template email from HR announcing dismissal after 30 years of service to the community. How it feels to be suddenly on unemployment. How it feels to see a posting for the very job you held that asks, "Are you an experienced professional looking to join a company that will appreciate your talent and hard work?" While the actions of Schweiger may not be illegal, they are despicable.
And the stories of these workers are part of a larger story: the story of how corporations like Schweiger Dermatology Group can use the Coronavirus as a scapegoat as they assert their will over local businesses and the people who made them run. This is a story of local significance with national implications.
I hope you will reach out with genuine interest and seek to take a closer look at these injustices.
Respectfully submitted,
Matthew Connolly
