Meet our copyeditor, Nicole Noce! Nicole is a senior from Springfield, PA double majoring in English and Math with a double minor in secondary education studies and journalism, editing, and publishing.

Meet our Student Life editor and this week’s #staffspotlight, Emma Russell! Emma is a sophomore from Pasadena, MD majoring in English and Theatre with a minor in Journalism, Editing, and Publishing. This is Emma’s first year with The Elm, and she chose to join our staff to experiment with different forms of writing.

She’s exciting to be writing and assigning stories about how students and clubs are finding new ways to connect; even though things aren’t happening in person, doesn’t mean they aren’t happening! She hopes to keep the student body informed about campus events to maintain a sense of community.

After college, Emma would love to do some traveling and possibly go to graduate school in England. Her dream job would be to work at a book publishing company, hopefully as an editor. Keep up the great work, Emma! ✍🏼 #journalism #studentpublications

Meet Stephanie Fleming, another one of our copyeditors! A junior, this is Stephanie’s second year in this position. With previous experience in the behind-the-scenes work of a publication, Stephanie knew she would enjoy editing other peoples’ writing for our very own on-campus newspaper, The Elm, in a paid position!

Stephanie would like people to know that being a copyeditor is like being the final line of defense: the “goalie” of the publication. She’d love to get back into the Publications House to work at the editing table with her colored pens, but until then, she’s grateful to keep editing remotely and making sure articles are ready for publication.

A computer science and economics double-major, Stephanie hopes to be employed straight out of college. Her dream job is anything that will make her excited to get up and go to work in the morning! #staffspotlight #editing #studentpublications

We’re kicking off the new semester with a staff spotlight 🔦on Erica Quinones! Erica, a junior, is in her second year as News Co-Editor, and was previously a staff writer for both news and opinion. She was introduced to the Elm by former News editor Cassy Sottile, who brought her to the first staff meeting her freshman year. Erica appreciates her work as a News editor because it forced her to overcome her shyness and get immersed in campus life by talking to students and staff members. She also feels the social responsibility of promoting student voices, holding administration accountable to their demands, and archiving the College’s history as it happens in the moment.

As a major with minors in German and political science, Erica is thinking about a career in library science as a research librarian. Her dream job is anywhere she can pursue information and assist others! 📖 #staffspotlight #studentjournalism #news

It’s #staffspotlight time: Meet our fearless leader and Editor-In-Chief, MacKenzie Brady! Mackenzie is a senior from Baltimore, and a double major in English and Art with a minor in creative writing. She started at The Elm as Photo Editor and photographer, and built her experience section-editing as Student Life editor last year. Her interest in journalism and getting important information to students, faculty, and staff drives her work at The Elm.

After college, MacKenzie is considering an MFA in poetry or a job in journalism. As far as her dream job goes, she has a lot of ideas—but will be content doing anything interesting that she’s passionate about. Thanks for your leadership and guidance, EIC! 🌟

Our second 🌟#staffspotlight🌟 is Jensyn Hartzell, our Sports Editor. Jensyn in a junior from Nazareth, PA and a business management major with minors in marketing and creative writing. When she first started as a sports staff writer last year, The Elm was just a side job—but now that she’s an editor, she’s become much more interested in journalism! Although the Sports section would normally primarily report on athletic games and events, Jensyn hopes to get creative and focus on how coaches and students are navigating COVID-19 while still participating in their sport. She also wants to keep the campus updated on staff changes and have athletes and staff share athletic training and fitness advice.

After college, Jensyn would like to work in marketing and also publish a fiction novel. Her dream job has always been to be a New York Times #1 Bestselling Author. Don’t forget us back at The Elm when you’re famous, Jensyn! 📚

Our first #staffspotlight of the year is shining on our Opinion Editor, Emma Campbell! Emma is a junior from Annapolis majoring in English with minors in Journalism, Editing, and Publishing and Creative Writing. A consistent Opinion staff writer for her first two years, Emma was inspired by Elm staff who shared her passion for writing. She describes The Elm as “a community dedicated to truth-telling.” ✏️
Emma anticipates that her section will delve deep into the 2020 election for the first semester, but also hopes to cover stories unfolding in Chestertown—even despite the physical distance—as well as current events happening worldwide. 🌎
After college, Emma would be thrilled to work in a job where she gets paid to write, though she’s also interested in publishing and editing. Her dream job, other than writing, would be a position in the British royal family. 👑
Special shout out to Emma for featuring The Elm on her personal social media, especially articles by her section staff writers, who she urges “to be fearless in their reporting.” Thanks for your dedication, Emma! #studentnewspaper #opinion

Editor, The Elm Upon an unrelated google search I came across "Man Dissatisfied With Convocation’s Douglass Scholar," which appears to have been published under the editorial direction of Brooke Schultz. As an author of a book on Frederick Douglass, as well as a journalist for the past decade with credentials to report from the United States Capitol, I am taken aback by this story in which the writer admits to essentially writing the story from a single perspective and: "The Elm did not respond to any of his messages." If you had I could have sent texts and/or emails in which students I spoke with were interested in taking action before, I presume, officials at the university got to them. Your article did not investigate this nor confirm any information on my end.
