On September 11, 2001, New York City firefighters entered the World Trade Center while thousands of people were desperately trying to escape.
For many firefighters, the mission was simple: keep climbing, reach those who needed help, and get as many people out as possible.
The conditions inside the towers became increasingly dangerous. Smoke filled stairwells, communications were difficult, and firefighters carried heavy equipment upward while exhausted and injured civilians moved in the opposite direction toward safety.
Hundreds of firefighters, police officers and other emergency personnel continued working despite the extraordinary danger around them.
By the end of that morning, the FDNY had suffered an unimaginable loss: 343 members were killed in connection with the attacks on the World Trade Center.
Behind that number were 343 individual lives β firefighters with families, friends and colleagues who had responded to help strangers during one of the darkest mornings in American history.
Their sacrifice remains one of the defining stories of September 11.
