How to connect double 2x12 girder to column/wall for a porch?
How to connect double 2x12 girder to columns/walls for a porch?

Okay guys I need help. Working an architecture internship, and my task for the last few weeks has been to build this model. My boss is very busy and rarely in, and it’s a small office so the other employees are very busy (and also fresh out of school, so they often dont know structure well either).

So here’s my dilemma. Boss man said the girder connecting the columns to the wall was going to be a double 2x12 and it’ll probably be a “sit in” condition to the exterior wall. However, he told me that after already gluing and assembling the walls and columns 😂 he also said to “look in the book for the explanation”. Well, I can’t find any answers in the carpentry book he gave me.. so I took to google. Google has only shown me connections with a face mount hanger, that connects directly on the edge of the wall. So then I go to ChatGPT and essentially I’m told there are multiple options. Both are viable.

Means I already assembled all these conditions, and it would be very difficult to cut out a space for a “sit in” connection at this point, do you guys think I could get away with the “face mount hanger” style instead?

How to fill wood grain?
I sprayed and back rolled a coat of primer onto board and batten about 24 hours ago. The board Iused is a 1/4” plywood material and the batten is pre-primed trim boards.

I had assumed the primer + layers of paint would fill in the plywood board grain but after the first layer of primer the grain is still showing. Should I sand and then roll on another layer of primer before I sand + spray the paint on? Or, will the next couple layers of paint smooth it out?

What’s wrong?
I was trying to cut a stringer for a stair using the circular saw and I got this. It became harder and harder to keep cutting. The blade is sharp but the wood was a bit wet. I’m not sure what to do. Thanks

SW Emerald Terrible Coverage
We usually use SW Emerald but recently got a few gallons in Theater Red and imits like painting with water colors. This was after going over the first coat again (not waiting for cost dry time because coverage was so bad)

Initial color was a sandy tan kind of color. Burned 2 gallons on 339sqft of wall.

How are my cut in lines?
We are painting our house, working with this unforgiving dark green right now. I work in remodeling, but have very little painting experience aside from primer on patchwork then we have a painter come in on our jobs.

How am I doing cutting in? I ended up kinda having the slightest overlap towards the ceiling because I felt like it looked more like a defined line. Without doing that it looked very uneven because of the white ceiling.

I also have essential tremors which is why I struggle to have a super consistent line. Does it look bad the way I did it?

Best tape for taping off trim?
I just painted the trim and taped it off with blue #2093 Sharp Line multi surface tape. I walked away for an hour and when I came back the tape was coming up. I switched to regular old blue tape and it is also coming up. The trim is dry and clean so I’m not sure why the tape isn’t adhering to it. What is everyone else using? Thanks!

I guess I used the incorrect tape
I am not happy with my paint job after tape removal. This is my first time doing a DIY project. How can I fix this? This issue is all around our bathroom.

Thank you

Why did this happen?
This is one coat of Behr Marquee Interior Semi-Gloss paint with some spot touch ups. What did we do wrong? All of the paint marks are visible and it looks awful. Is it the semi-gloss or some other user error?

Oil based gloss porch and trim
I know it’s not a popular look anymore but I think there is something oddly satisfying about old fashioned oil based gloss paint. It looks more like paint used to look. The porch isn’t perfect but it seems appropriate. Shutters, porch floor, railings, pillars, window trim and swing - all gloss oil based.
