Hey all. Im not going into the details too much, but for context, my wife and I got a roof put on our house from my mom as part of my inheritance. We have 2 babies, I just started my own business, and we really needed one badly so she saw a need and wanted to help. We are grateful, however, she chose a contractor whom didn't even have any contracts written up before accepting money or starting the job, over estimated out roof by almost 10 squares, did some iffy work in my opinon, so on and so forth.
Anyways, his guys came and banged out the roof in 1.5 days. I wasnt super happy about the attention to detail (or lack thereof), the craftsmanship, the prep or cleanup, etc.
His guys had to rip out some existing framing on my flat roof because of rot, and instead of reframing it the way it was to maintain a consistent straight roof line against the house, they just threw plywood on older framing they found underneath which created a valley that is barely out of level or shedding water.
That is my main problem, and the contractors rememdy was to remove my gutters to prevent ice dams on my porch? I was pretfy confused by that. On top of that they did a crappy job removing my siding and damaged a bunch of it, left a bunch of trash and debris in my neighbor's yard and they didn't clean up my yard very good either. I had to pick up about a half gallon bucket's worth of rusty nails so my kids, wife and dog didn't step on one like I did.
Tell me, is this typical with roofers or did my mom and I get duped by a shady contractor?
Edit: I am a master carpenter specializing in custom kitchens, cabinetry, built-ins, stairs and railings, restoration work and furniture making. I have roofed many times in the past, but never wanted to make a career out of it. I know that a lot of the work that was done on my roof was crappy, I just want to get some outside opinions from people in the business is all. I appreciate all of the feedback. God bless you guys!
