An entitled woman stole my 8-year-old daughter's and my reserved lounge chairs and threw our towels in the trash—but 20 minutes later, karma hit her hard.
My daughter, Mia, 8, finished her last round of chemo eleven days ago.
She lost her hair. She spent her actual birthday hooked to an IV instead of at the trampoline park she'd been begging to visit for a year.
When her oncologist finally said the words "we're done, for now," Mia's first request wasn't a toy or a party.
She asked, very quietly, if she could just go somewhere with a pool, "like a regular kid." I booked us two days at a resort an hour from home that same afternoon.
We reserved our lounge chairs the night before, like the resort instructed—towels clipped neatly with our room number written on the tags, exactly where staff told us to leave them.
We went to get smoothies. Fifteen minutes, maybe less.
When we came back, our chairs were gone. A woman in a designer swimsuit was stretched across one, sunglasses pushed into perfectly styled hair, her boyfriend beside her scrolling his phone in the other.
Our towels were in the trash can nearby.
"Excuse me," I said carefully. "Those were our reserved chairs."
She didn't even look up. "Reserved doesn't mean anything if you're not sitting in them."
"We were gone for ten minutes—"
"Not my problem." She finally glanced at Mia—at her bald head, her thin arms, the hospital bracelet she still hadn't removed—and her mouth twisted into something close to disgust. "Honestly, maybe go somewhere a little more... appropriate."
I felt my whole body go hot with a rage I couldn't put into words.
I pulled our towels out of the trash in silence, found two ordinary chairs further back, and tried to salvage what was left of Mia's first good day in months.
About twenty minutes later, a man in a resort polo WINKED AT ME; then he approached the entitled woman's chair, holding a blue box.
"Excuse me, ma'am," he said. "You're actually our 500th guest to check in this week. We have a little gift for you."
The woman lit up immediately, sitting up straighter, already reaching for the box like she'd expected nothing less.
She opened it.
And the scream that came out of her stopped the entire pool deck cold. ⬇️
