No interpreter. No access. No idea when my son’s name would be called.

Transcript: For the first time, I attended one of my sons’ graduations without an interpreter. My other sons graduated with interpreters on stage, so this was a different experience for me as a Deaf parent.
I had to watch carefully, trying to figure out who was being called and when my son would walk across the stage. Then suddenly, I saw his face. Seeing him walk across that stage filled me with so much joy and brought tears to my eyes. This is the reality many Deaf parents experience. We don’t always have equal access to information during important moments. But no matter what barriers exist, nothing could take away the pride I felt watching my son graduate kindergarten. Congratulations, my sweet baby. Mommy is so proud of you. Access matters. Every parent deserves to fully experience their child’s special moments.

VD: QB sits in the audience during her son’s kindergarten graduation. She watches the stage closely while families cheer and record videos. As the ceremony continues, she becomes emotional while watching her son graduate. The video shares her experience as a Deaf parent attending a graduation without an interpreter and the pride she felt seeing her son walk across the stage.

I requested ASL interpreters for Beyond Wonderland Chicago and was told they’re unable to provide access because requests must be submitted 30 days in advance. I understand planning takes time, but this is hard to sit with.

Hearing attendees can still buy tickets 2 weeks before the event and attend without barriers. Deaf attendees are told if the 30 day deadline is missed, there may be no access at all.

That doesn’t feel like equal access.

I’m sharing this because accessibility matters, and Deaf people deserve access to live music and festivals too. Hoping this brings awareness and encourages better accessibility moving forward.

Deaf culture isn’t silent. We want equality, access, captions, and respect.

ID: QB stands with her head down in front of a graffiti covered wall while newspapers fly around her. She wears a red, white, and navy Chicago Bulls outfit with matching Jordan sneakers, a Bulls cap, and carries a red Bulls tote bag. The wall features bold graffiti messages about Deaf culture, equality, captions, access, and inclusion in a dramatic street art style inspired by protest art and breaking news headlines.

Had fun at Coachella Day 1, but accessibility should be available all day. I had to rely on captions at times. Hope to see continued improvements.

Transcript:

Day 1 at Coachella.

Amazing seeing the girls doing their thing with makeup and hairstyles!

Huge shoutout to the people from A+ Accessible.

They were so cool, friendly, and helpful.

Unfortunately, they didn’t have interpreters available all day.

So I had to rely on my phone for captions. I still made it work, but seriously…

They need to provide interpreters all day, no matter what. Accessibility shouldn’t be limited to certain hours. Had an amazing Day 1… but accessibility matters. Interpreters should be available all day.

VD: Got ready for Day 1 at Coachella, saw the girls doing makeup and hair, linked with A+ Accessible, explored the festival, enjoyed the vibes, and used my phone for captions when interpreters weren’t available all day.
