When the auctioneer announced that the starting price for the sick horse was only ten dollars, a poor old man suddenly raised his hand, and the wealthy farmers burst into laughter, never imagining how this story would endโฆ ๐ฒ
From early morning, the old country auction yard was filled with its usual noise and excitement. Under the bright sun, dozens of farmers and livestock traders discussed prices, argued with one another, and laughed as animals were brought into the ring one after another. Some had come to buy a strong workhorse, others were looking for a good cow for their farm, while some were simply there to watch the auction.
Behind a large wooden table sat the auctioneer, a man named Roberto. He called out the prices in a loud voice and slammed his wooden gavel down with force, while the stands answered with a constant buzz of voices.
When it was time for the final lot, two workers led out an old white horse. Or rather, they tried to. The animal could barely stay on its feet before it slowly collapsed onto the ground. Its coat was dirty and matted, old scars covered its sides, and its ribs stuck out so badly that it looked as if the horse had not eaten for weeks.
Laughter immediately spread through the crowd.
โ That thing belongs in the slaughterhouse!
โ It'll be dead within a week anyway!
โ Nobody would take it, even if it were free!
Roberto smirked and tapped his gavel on the table.
โ Starting bid: ten dollars! Do I have any takers?
Silence answered him.
A few men looked at each other and simply shook their heads.
โ Who would want that flea-ridden skeleton?
โ It isn't even good enough to feed the dogs.
Everyone was already preparing to move on to the next lot when, from the very last row, a thin old man with gray hair slowly stood up. He wore a worn-out shirt and torn boots.
Carefully, he raised his hand.
โ I... I'll buy him.
The entire yard erupted in laughter.
One wealthy farmer even stood up.
โ Old man, have you completely lost your mind? That's not a horse, it's a pile of bones!
Another added,
โ You're about to throw away your last bit of money. In a few days, that poor thing will die, and you'll be left with nothing to eat yourself.
โ You'd be better off buying bread!
The laughter only grew louder.
Roberto looked at the old man carefully.
โ Are you sure? Nobody's giving your money back.
The old man slowly walked closer. His face looked tired, and there was a deep sadness in his eyes.
He reached into his pocket, pulled out a small bundle, and placed a few old wrinkled bills and a handful of coins on the table.
โ This is everything I have left.
The crowd began murmuring again.
โ He's completely crazy!
โ Now he'll starve too!
The auctioneer frowned.
โ Why do you want this horse?
The old man looked gently at the animal lying on the ground and quietly replied,
โ Because he's my last hope.
For a few seconds, everything fell silent. Then someone burst out laughing.
โ Hope? In that half-dead wreck?
โ He won't even make it home!
The old man said nothing. He walked over to the horse, slowly knelt beside him, and gently stroked his neck.
