IndusTRY Talks: Ryan Oliver at Indy Type Shop

The typewriter community is full of cool people who specialize in even cooler work. Come meet some of them through IndusTRY Talks: a meet & greet/chill with the greats. This month, we’re welcoming Ryan Oliver.

Ryan Oliver is an author, actor, special fx artist, filmmaker, and a journeyman artist hailing from Chicago. Some notable screen acting credits include roles in Chicago Fire, Power Book IV: Force, The Chi, and Curse of the Sin Eater. As a filmmaker, he has directed experimental shorts, the films Air Conditions (2012), Restoration (2014), and several music videos for bands such as Macabre, The Atlas Moth, Child Bite, Bill and Phil, and Lair of the Minotaur.

Oliver’s latest venture is as a graphic novel writer, founder, and independent publisher of Blind Cyclops Books. To date, the BCB library holds five unique titles with more to follow. ‘Phantom Grip’ will be officially releasing on the first weekend in May in conjunction with ‘Nightmare Weekend Chicago’ at the Stevens Convention Center where copies of the limited edition 1st prints will be available for sale. I’m ever pleased to announce Blind Cyclops’ fifth title, PHANTOM GRIP. This is my 3rd graphic novel as an author, the second book for M. Ryan Arnold as an artist under the BCB banner, and our first book collaborating together. I’m very proud of Arnold’s work and diligence in adapting my original script for this story and together we are enthused to share it with you.

88 pages of mystique, danger, and suspense are yours for the taking from the talented team of and - About the project: Coma Noir is a graphic novel based on The Atlas Moth album of the same name. When Nick first approached Stavros about the idea, there was no hesitation on his part. Stavros had already been thinking about wanting to turn the album into a graphic novel, so this seemed serendipitous. With a story already in mind, Nick ran with the basics and filled in the blanks, fleshed out the details, and finalized the story by, adding to Stavros’s already killer idea.
After the script was finished, an illustrator Stavros had in mind played around with some storyboards but ultimately felt like this was a project beyond his wheelhouse. And so, the project sat, waiting to be colored to life for a while until Stavros’s friend mentioned she knew a guy. And knowing a guy is when it all came to life. In steps M Ryan Arnold of Hot Trash Comix, a one-man wrecking crew of insane illustration. His artistic vision, paired with Nick and Stavros’s script, finally came together in a tale of love and woe that could only take place in The Windy City.

BCB’s Online store is officially SOLD OUT of GODFLY! Thank you to all our friends, family and readers for helping us clean out our inventory in 6 months…Not bad for a couple indie outsiders. Alas, the horrors aren’t over yet- you can still find in store copies at the shops tagged in the post and a second printing is in the works for the near future.
