My wife said, "I'm leaving you for someone younger." I responded, "I wish you the best." Then I called the dean of the university where her new boyfriend was a student and my family was a major donor. Suddenly, she was begging me to think things through. I, 48, male, have been married to my wife, Alice, 45, for 20 years. Or, well, I was. Last Tuesday, she sat me down in our living room, the one with the bay window she always said was her favorite spot, and delivered the news with the kind of sterile compassion you'd use to tell a stranger their car is being towed. "I'm leaving you, Roger," she said, her hands neatly folded in her lap. She was wearing the pearl earrings I bought her for our 15th anniversary.

My wife's lover laughed when I caught them. I didn't say a word. I just uploaded the proof to her family group. 10 minutes later, her brother was at his door. I, 34, male, feel like a stranger in my own life. A project manager watching a critical system failure in real time. My job is to identify variables, mitigate risks, and create predictable outcomes. For the last 6 years, my marriage was my most important project. I thought all the inputs were correct. I was wrong. The whole system has crashed. 3 days ago, I came home early from a business trip. A rare success, a deal closed ahead of schedule.

My fiancée spent our wedding fund on her ex. I froze the account, said nothing, just pressed charges. 2 days later, she showed up screaming at my office with her parents behind her. I, 29 male, am, or I guess was, a pretty simple guy. I have a decent job in data analysis, a small apartment I'm proud of, and a 5-year plan that, until last week, was perfectly on track. The centerpiece of that plan was Sophia, 28, my fiancée of 1 year, together for four. We were saving up for our wedding next spring. We agreed to open a separate high-yield savings account for it.
