**** GET THOSE OUTDOOR GARDEN SEEDS STARTED!! ****
Depending on where you are, you may have already started your outdoor garden seeds (and our friends down south are already growing). If not, what are you waiting for?? You may not be sure when to start. Here are some tips!
🌱 When to Start Your Outdoor Garden Seeds 🌱
Spring is in the air, and it’s time to plan your garden! But when should you start your seeds? It all starts with knowing your gardening zone and last frost date. You can find your USDA zone by searching your zip code at https://www.almanac.com/gardening/planting-calendar
You will get your last frost date, a whole list of crops, indoor start dates, and direct sowing dates. This helps you understand your climate and growing season. Your average last frost date tells you when it’s safe to plant outside without fear of frost damage. But, the weather can be unpredictable, so don’t rush to plant on that day! Wait a week or two. For example, my last frost here in my zip (Chicago area) date is April 30, but I do not plant out until May 15 or after.
And if you have not started yet, DON’T PANIC, it is still early, just get started NOW!
🥬 What to Start Indoors: Tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, and some herbs like basil (to name a few) benefit from a head start inside 6–8 weeks before your last frost. These plants thrive in warmth and need time to mature.
🥕 What to Direct Sow Outdoors: Once the soil is workable, plant cold-hardy crops like carrots, peas, lettuce, and radishes directly in the ground. After your last frost date you can sow beans, squash, cucumbers and more.
🌿 Hardening Off is Key! When you start seeds inside, your plant babies are pampered and used to inside temps and perfect conditions. Before moving seedlings outside, you have to give them time to adjust to the changing temps, sun and wind by gradually introducing them to the outdoors. Some people do this over 7-14 days. I prefer to do a quicker lazy hardening period. Hardening helps avoid shock and gives your plants the best chance to thrive.
