It is unfortunate to read negative stories regarding ! Below is a story published by People magazine about a woman from CA who is asking for custody of the three children she carried for a single man. There are some issues mentioned in the full article that I feel potential surrogates must know.
1. Melissa mentioned never have met or spoken with the intended father.
Our Response: If you are interested in becoming a surrogate, you need to make an informed decision of whether or not to work with someone by meeting face to face. In the meeting, you will need to discuss all of the issues pertaining to the surrogacy journey.)
2. Abortion/Termination.
Our Response: It is a touchy subject, but you need to discuss with the intended parents and the agency of what you are comfortable doing! Ultimately, it is your body!
3. Three Embryos Implanted.
Our Response: ASRM (American Society for Reproductive Medicine) has guidelines that many follow pertaining to the ethics within this field. They suggest 1 or 2 embryos, but not 3. In order to reduce the chances of multiples and pregnancy complications, we always suggest 1 or 2 embryos.
4. Intended Father's Funds.
Our Response: The intended father was living with his parents and apparently did not have the funds to care for three children. Intended Parents must be screened along with the surrogate, to confirm they are able to move forward both psychologically and financially.
If you plan on becoming a surrogate, please inform yourself of the agency with whom you plan on working with. Message us with any questions.
All three babies were taken from Cook by nurses when they were born on Feb. 22
