Burt was the kind of old recluse every neighborhood has—the one people nod to but never really know. But Burt hadn’t chosen solitude. After losing his wife and son years ago, he simply faded into the background, unnoticed and alone. At 91, the silence of his home had become unbearable.

Then, one chilly afternoon, he heard a faint whimper. A battered cardboard box sat near the curb, a note taped to the top: "Take care of him!" Inside, a trembling black-and-white puppy stared up at him. Burt scooped him up, took him home, and named him Sebastian.

Two people were killed and another was seriously injured in a head-on crash last Friday on Highway 281 in Erath County.

DPS troopers say 63-year-old Karen Huey, from Hood County, was heading north on 281 when she "failed to drive in a single lane" and crashed into a Cadillac, killing herself and the other driver.

Investigators say 21-year-old Jaelen Green, from Watauga, was driving the Cadillac. He did not survive the crash. His girlfriend, 22-year-old Nicole Doggett, from Georgetown, was seriously injured and rushed to a Fort Worth hospital.

"Nicole said the car the car actually lost so much control, they got hit from the back end of the car, and the driver side took all the impact. Jae was driving," Doggett's friend said. "In his last moments, he tried to shield Nicole, and we think that’s probably what saved her."
