“There is at least one niche in the world of print that is seeing something of a revival: Children’s Magazines.” Elizabeth Segran, a writer at Fast Company, talks w NPR’s Marketplace about why we’re seeing kids magazines come back. She says, “Over the last 9 years, there a few new entrants into this new world of print magazines: Kazoo is the magazine that arguably launched this new movement. And it’s focused on kids age 5-12 and in particular it really wants to help girls grow up strong and confident.”

Tune in to find out why print—at least for kids—is not dead, and is in fact exploding.

You’ll find shout-outs to long gone (but never forgotten) Sassy magazine 😍 and our pals 👏👏👏

Elizabeth Segran, a writer at Fast Company, explores why we are seeing a kids' magazines revival. “Kazoo is the magazine that arguably launched this new movement. It’s focused on kids age 5-12. In particular it really wants to help girls grow up strong and confident.”

While all sorts of child- and tween-focused magazines of the previous decades are no more, a new generation of print magazines for kids is emerging.

As parents, when we think of great leaders, we don’t have to consult history books, we can list many from our own lifetime. But, American kids under 12 years old have seen poor examples “winning” twice over. Here’s a little exercise from our latest issue to get readers thinking about what it means to be a good leader.

DRAW A LEADER:
Good leaders come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. Follow the steps below to sketch out what one looks like to you and then answer the prompts that go with each.

1. DRAW TWO EYES. Good for [check all that apply]:
🔲 Reading interesting books
🔲 Recognizing talent in others
🔲 Staring blankly at the TV

2. DRAW TWO EARS. Used to hear:
🔲 New ideas
🔲 Constructive criticism
🔲 How great you—and only you—are

3. ADD A NOSE. Excellent at:
🔲 Sniffing out new opportunities
🔲 Poking it where it doesn’t belong

4. ADD A MOUTH. Helpful for:
🔲 Inspiring people
🔲 Thanking people
🔲 Calling people mean names

5. PILE ON SOME HAIR.
This one’s totally irrelevant. It’s just fun to draw hair!

6. NOW, TELL US MORE ABOUT THIS LEADER. (CIRCLE ALL THAT APPLY.)
Has a kind heart
Takes responsibility
Blames others
Lifts people up
Bullies people
Is fair
Is greedy
Works hard

Which leaders inspire you most? What kind of leader do you want to be?
