NEIU Independent The Independent is a public forum for the university and the community surrounding NEIU Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies in Kenwood/Hyde Park.

The Independent is a public forum for the university and the community surrounding Northeastern Illinois University and its satellite campuses, El Centro in the Logan Square community and Jacob C. The Independent is completely student run and receives no prior review of its content by anyone other than its student editors. The Independent is published every other week except during summer and seme

ster breaks. Deadlines are nine (9) days prior to the issue in which a contribution is to appear. Views expressed in letters are those of the university community and not those of the Editorial Board. The Editor-in-Chief is responsible for the content of the Independent, and views presented do not necessarily represent those of the administration, faculty or students. The Independent is a member of the Illinois College Press Association and Associated Collegiate Press.

📢 Calling All Non-NEIU Community Writers! 📰

We’re excited to open up the opportunity for non-NEIU community members to contribute to The Independent!
This is your chance to share your voice on important issues impacting NEIU and the broader community.

Community Writers:

- Writers who are not current students or alumni of NEIU.
- You’ll work closely with section editors and copy editors and must follow up on the editorial process for your stories.
- All work is unpaid for community writers.

Letters to the Editor:

- Maximum of 1,500 words.
- Must include your full name and job position or community role (if you’re not a student or alum).
- Focus on issues affecting NEIU or the broader community.
- We reserve the right to edit for spelling and grammar, and we may reject letters.
