For years, St. Monica prayed and wept for her son Augustine as he searched for truth far from the Catholic faith. She followed him across the Mediterranean, never giving up hope that God’s grace would reach his heart.

Through her perseverance, prayers, and trust in God, Augustine eventually encountered Christ, was baptized by St. Ambrose, and became one of the Church’s greatest saints and teachers.

Their relationship reminds us that conversion often takes time, and that patient love can remain faithful even when answers seem far away. St. Monica teaches us to persevere in prayer; St. Augustine teaches us that no heart is beyond God’s mercy.

“The child of those tears shall never perish.”

Today, may St. Monica intercede for all parents and loved ones who are praying for someone who has lost their way and may St. Augustine remind us that our restless hearts find their true home in God.

Forgiveness does not automatically mean trust.

Fr. Tim points to St. Paul and Alexander the coppersmith. Paul says, “Alexander did me great harm,” but also, “May it not be held against him.”

Forgive him? Absolutely.
Desire reconciliation? Yes.
Trust him again? Maybe not.

Paul even warns the disciples: “Beware of him.”

You can forgive someone and still recognize that boundaries are necessary.

“I spent so much of my time saying yes to myself.”

What are you working so hard for?

We can spend so much energy trying to prove ourselves, protect ourselves, get everything right, and hold everything together. And underneath all of it can be a desire to know that we’re loved, known, and that we matter.

But we don’t have to secure that for ourselves.

The silence of self-love is learning to let go of some of that self-reliance and self-protection and receive the poverty of being a beloved son or daughter. We can be imperfect. We can be a work in progress. We can need help.

The Father’s love doesn’t increase when we succeed or disappear when we fail. His love is already “maxed out” for us.

The freedom we’re looking for begins when we stop working so hard for love and let ourselves be loved.

Can I forgive someone without trusting them again?

Fr. Tim breaks it down into three things: forgiveness, reconciliation, and trust.

Forgiveness is commanded by God.

Reconciliation is desired, but it requires two people willing to come back into right relationship.

Trust? That depends.

If someone continues to lie, deceive, or hurt you, you can forgive them while still setting boundaries and protecting your vulnerability.
