At least 12 people were killed and 27 others wounded on Tuesday in an attack on Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad, according to officials. It was the first major attack to hit the city in more than a decade and comes as Pakistan is facing a resurgence of assaults by several insurgencies.

An attacker detonated a bomb near the entrance of a courthouse around lunchtime, according to the Pakistani interior minister, Mohsin Naqvi. He said the attacker had tried but failed to enter the court complex, with hundreds of lawyers, defendants and judges inside. The attacker died at the scene, the authorities said.

The attack has raised alarm that insurgent violence, confined in recent years to Pakistan’s western regions, has reached its urban centers. Islamabad, a quiet, leafy city of a million people, is the seat of political power and home to embassies and the headquarters of many international organizations.

The Pakistani defense minister, Khawaja Asif, said Pakistan was “in a state of war.”

“Anyone who thinks that the Pakistan Army is fighting this war in the Afghan-Pakistan border region and the remote areas of Balochistan should take today’s su***de attack at the Islamabad district courts as a wake-up call: This is a war for all of Pakistan

“We lost our 15 year old son to bullying, abuse and humiliation.

Mihir was always a very happy and kind child. He loved playing basketball and dreamt of becoming a pilot some day. On 15th Jan, Mihir had returned from school. An hour later, we heard a shrill voice. Mihir jumped from the 26th floor of our building to death.

We saw our son passing away in front of our eyes. We had no clue on why he took such a drastic step. Upon inquiring, we got to know what all he had endured at school and this completely changed our lives.

Our son was bullied, abused and beaten at school. He was forcibly taken to the washroom where he was made to lick toilet seats. His head was pushed into the urinal and flushed.

We were horrified and devastated to know that our son endured so much pain and humiliation till his last breath. We wish no one has to see such a day and lose their kid to bullying. My son’s death must not go in vain. We will do all we can to fight for justice for our son. We are requesting all the authorities to bring justice to those who committed such a barbaric crime.

We will not stop till we get Justice!”

President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Wednesday to combat antisemitism and pledged to deport non-citizen college students and others who took part in pro-Palestinian protests.
A fact sheet on the order promises "immediate action" by the Justice Department to prosecute "terroristic threats, arson, vandalism and violence against American Jews" and marshal all federal resources to combat what it called "the explosion of antisemitism on our campuses and streets" since the Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel by Palestinian Islamist group Hamas.
