I’ve barely recorded or played in a year but decided to break the fast on this songwriting contest. ..
Tied a noose, dropped a twenty in the jukebox, slid in the booth next to you
Said, I heard you’re the empress of hip rock
You said that’s true
I said I could die tonight and I’d do it, too, long as I’m with you
You said take it all, take everything, just leave me these shoes, said
Don’t that just beat all?
The drops in your eyes, the laundry upstairs, dishes still out on the table
Neighbors all joke how we ended up the perfect suburbia fable
Don’t that just beat all, these dreams you dreamed with me?
If the lines should break and fall from poles
they’ll find our voices in the cables, fossil bones
I know you’re sleeping, arms wrapped tight around a ghost
Don’t that just beat all?
Left my watch in the dresser when you called that night, saw it in a movie once
A braver man might have put up a fight, but a wise man knows when it’s done
Don’t that just beat all?
If the lines should break and fall from poles
They’ll find out voices in the cables, fossil bones
I know you’re sleeping, arms wrapped tight around a ghost
Don’t that just beat all?
