Still so stoked I could go to ’s “A Night at the Pictures” on Friday, thanks to this Luggable air purifier and a BreatheTeq XL KN95 mask. Shoutout to Aaron at YCR especially for being so active in making sure was cool with me plugging the Lug in the theater. It means everything to be able to be around cool, weird, experimental art.

Except for my show last year at (give to their fundraiser!), I haven’t performed on stage in years (tho I do think of each episode very consciously as a show) because so few people are putting measures in place to make the air cleaner and protect all our brains & blood & guts from Long COVID.

It turns out I don’t even need to be performing to get the high of being in an art community. It legit healed a part of my soul to be able to share space with local artists in my new city who are voraciously creative, DIY, and SO WELCOMING. I can’t remember the last time it was that easy to be in a room where I only went in knowing 3 people.

Cleveland artists, I want to come to your events! Whether you make free jazz or drag shows or short films (or smooth music like the album I’m still playing), I’d love to do what I can to make your thing COVID-safer by bringing at least this one air purifier. It’s not much, but it’s better than nothing. I don’t have the capacity to start a whole .air.club (tho massive gratitude to them for lighting the way), but I can plug in my quiet lil Luggable and have a blast in my mask. My motivation is largely selfish: I want to feel safer going to cool things. If you’re interested in making your events more accessible to disabled folks who desperately want to enjoy your art and experience connection, let’s talk!

This is what it has taken for me to return to work in an office. Hours of research. Almost a thousand dollars. Testing fit and breathability of four different kinds of masks (before finally settling on the amazing BreatheTeq XL KN95s). Two air purifiers. A pluslife at-home PCR tester on the way. And it’s working, because my officemate tested positive Friday, and I’ve stayed negative so far (on rapid tests, which are under 50% reliable but hey, it’s something).

This s**t sucks, man. When people in Cleveland ask me if I’ve performed around town, I gotta judge whether it’s worth it to tell them that the only way I’m comfortable doing so is if the show AT LEAST has cleaner air but really needs masks required or, what usually happens, kind of vaguely trail off and act like “oh yeah, I just haven’t been performing much recently (ie the last 4 1/2 years hmmm I wonder why).”

I don’t want this hobby. I want to do and see rad art. I wanna make friends and eat with them at restaurants. I wanna invite people over without having to ask them hella qualifying questions and spending the first 15 minutes testing our mucus.

I have the privilege of a little signing bonus and money from a Labor Day gig that allowed me to pay for this stuff instead of paying off my insulin pump supply debt (fun choices!). But man, I wish people would just put on COVID-safer shows. I wish you reading this would wear a mask indoors. Of course I wish our government did anything, but I trust them less than I trust you.
