During the pandemic, digital and physical spaces merged into a bewildering hybrid. At the same time, national dreams of rocket travel and interplanetary exploration were coopted by corporate tech giants. Pushing online images and digital animations to dizzying heights, the films in this program cut through the static to offer science-fictional perspectives on the past and present.

Filmed from the artist’s window during lockdown, John Smith's film CITADEL combines short fragments from British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s speeches relating to coronavirus with views of the London skyline recorded in a variety of weather conditions. Shifting its focus from the City of London’s gleaming skyscrapers to the inhabitants of the dense urban housing that lies in their shadow, this film contrasts faceless corporate power with individual lived experience. www.johnsmithfilms.com.

Catch it in the program 'Cheat-Cheat-Lied' from June 9-13 with an artists Q&A on today at 4:30 PM CST.

Official voices glorifying the wealthy and preaching civility in a time of unequal risk and hardship are confronted, questioned, and mocked with righteous indignation. These seven films consider the effects of the economics of plutocracy on our bodies, our minds, and our planet.

Who won the battle, and who’s losing the war? A profound disconnect between the political feeling in the air and its actual manifestation on the ground has defined daily life in recent years. With no clear end in sight, these brief dispatches from the United States, Germany, Sri Lanka, and Palestine focus on sacrifices made and victories won in a new era of exhaustion and fear.

Join us tonight for a special outdoor screening of the world premiere of Kera MacKenzie and Andrew Mausert-Mooney’s experimental doc Make a Distinction!

Drawing its title from the scientific process of identifying species and a speech given by Black Panther Party Deputy Chairman Fred Hampton, the film examines the shared political economy of television production, police militarization, and ecological collapse. The film issues a provocative challenge to the viewer: “name the enemy or become it.”

Special presentation by @CineFileChicago!

Chloé Galibert-Laîné’s work explores the intersection between cinema and online media. Focusing her distinctive gaze on moving images such as artist film, video games, terrorist propaganda, and everything in between, Galibert-Laîné’s performative essays burrow into the mystifying language of sound and picture. Chicago-based critic Jonathan Rosenbaum hailed The Eye Was in the Tomb and Stared at Daney as one of the best films of 2018. Her work has shown at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, the True/False Film Fest, the Images Festival, the European Media Art Festival, the Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival, and the Kasseler Dokfest, among others.

This program will be available from Saturday at noon until the end of the festival. All descriptions culled from Galibert-Laîné’s website.

Consider the mix of experimental narratives and poststructuralist essays in this program a trial by music of the essay-film form. Using musical elements and innovative sound design, each filmmaker tests whether the essay might be made to carry personal myths, erased histories, and tales of resistance with the ease of a song.

Artist Q&A tonight at 9:00 PM CST!

Will our podcasts save us? Can we internet our way out of the climate crisis? Can moving images connect us with other species, or are they just another way of asserting human dominance over a shared world of biodiversity? Surprising twists and humor arise as the filmmakers exorcise the ecological hierarchy from their worldview - and discover what remains.

The families we choose and the families we are born into carry their own sense of time. Using a mixture of found footage and original images, these works capture the infinite permutations of family time in the face of political and economic projects intended to render them meaningless. Throughout the program, filmmakers weather personal crises, celebrate the revolutionary potential of love, and recognize the time passing.

Shuruq Harb's film THE JUMP explores the psychological terrains of leaping into the void, its potential sense of cosmic freedom, physical thrill, suspension and definitive end. Set within the tectonic rift of the Jordan Valley, the film is narrated by a robotic voice that guides us through dizzying shots of the landscape while speculating the conditions surrounding a Palestinian man’s jump into the Mediterranean. This film unfolds like a visual poem that suspends the viewer into an otherworldly space, equally hypnotizing in its affects, alienating in its details, and emotionally compelling in its reflection.

A family has lunch under the shade of a C-47 warcraft. An army installation contains the last remnants of an endangered grassland ecology. Young filmmakers hone their skills making a cop show on Chicago streets. Stylized scenes of field botanists, retail clerks, and soldiers in Clarksville, Tennessee and television workers, and police in Chicago, Illinois reveal the unseen forces of imperialism in US daily life. Kera MacKenzie and Andrew Mausert-Mooney's film MAKE A DISTINCTION examines a television production and quotations from revolutionary and resistance fighters build to a provocation: name the enemy or become it.
