Let’s talk about the difference between gatekeeping and protecting your expertise.
I hear people throw around the word “gatekeeping” whenever a business owner doesn’t freely hand over their vendors, processes, or years of knowledge. But here’s my perspective…
I share an incredible amount of free education every single week across my social media platforms. I genuinely enjoy teaching and helping people get started.
But at some point, my knowledge becomes my service.
I’m a consultant. My expertise is what I sell. If you’re asking me to evaluate your business, recommend resources, connect you to my network, or walk you through years of experience, that’s no longer a casual conversation—it’s consulting.
Supporting Black-owned businesses also means respecting our boundaries and understanding that our expertise has value. You wouldn’t expect a lawyer, accountant, or therapist to work for free, so why should consultants?
That’s not gatekeeping.
That’s valuing the years, mistakes, investments, and experience that built my expertise.
If you’d like to pick my brain, I’d love to help. Just know there’s an invoice attached—and that’s perfectly okay. 🤎
