RECORD BREAKING YEAR FOR TORNADOES IN THE CHICAGO AREA...

Yet another tornado has been confirmed by the National Weather Service from Tuesday's derecho. This brings our 2026 tornado tally up to 71. The previous record was set in 2024 with 63 tornadoes.

5:50 PM THURSDAY OUTAGE UPDATE: 76.5% of customers are still without power in Lake County, 34% are in the dark in Porter County, and we're down to 13.5% of customers in Newton County. Newton County was previously at 32% around midday...big improvements there.

Crews have been working hard between rounds of rain and storms today, and unfortunately, will have to battle several more rounds of rain and possibly even a few isolated severe storms between now and Sunday.

SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH: Kankakee, Newton, Jasper Counties until 7 PM.

Strong to severe storms are approaching from the west. Damaging wind gusts and hail will be the main concerns for any severe storms that move through our area today, but a brief spin-up tornado isn't out of the question. Kankakee, Newton, and Jasper are included in SPC's 2% tornado risk area.
