One of my MANY Ron Carroll stories..... (long post)
Upon my return to DJing publicly again,(around 2007) Ron was one of the first to book me professionally. A LOT had changed since I stopped in 95 or 96. He reached out to me to do a party he had curated called "Good Times" it was at Club 720 on the North side. Multiple DJ's, 3 rooms from top to bottom of the club. Dj's like, Andre Hatchett, Glen Underground, Boo Chuck Wagon Williams, Farley, Mrgene Hunt, Gene Farris and many many more.
Anyway, he had a dinner for us all prior to the party. It was at a Brazilian Steakhouse restaurant called Brazza's.(in the Gold Coast area) Very high end! The dinner (On HIS dime) was for us to meet up, break bread, and sign contracts for our performances. This was HUGE for me. When I stopped djing, this was not how we did business, and the whole concept of signing contracts for a gig was foreign to me. He even insisted that I bring my husband as a guest.
We arrived to dinner, Ron was sitting at the head of the table. It seemed like he rented out the whole room for this dinner. He called me to go to a separate room with him briefly. This was where we signed our contracts. I was SO clueless about such things. I told him, look Ron Ive never done business like this as a dj. Then he said "sit down, let me explain some things to you"
What came after that, was to me, really speaks to who Ron was.
He said
1st, YOU are a Legend, and the first woman I've ever seen that dared to shatter a lot of myths in this game. I'm a fan of yours and always stood in Awe of you. YOU are a professional as well and should be treated as both with the legend you are and the professional you are becoming, and THIS is how it Should be done. He handed me the contract, told me to read it, and ask any questions I needed to assure I have full understanding of the contract. I did, and then we signed both (copies for the each of us). Then he handed me an envelope with a check in it. It was a deposit for my performance at the party. He told me, remember YOU are a Brand, and a professional, my favorite Female DJ, and a role model. Please NEVER forget that.
You will get the balance after you play.
I was floored!
We then went back to the room where we were dinning and told us to get whatever we wanted to eat, and as much as we wanted. We sat back down as others were arriving. Each DJ on the Bill he took to that room to sign contract, checking in with his guest, and eating himself.
The food kept coming, my husband and I were already full. But the food KEPT COMING! Rons ass, sat there with a smirk on his face, giggling at us. Eric and I were trying to figure out, HOW DO WE STOP THE FOOD?
Neither of us had been to this type of restaurant before. FINALLY Ron let us off the hook, with laughter and to his total amusement. He pointed out a round disk placed at each of our plate settings. I thought it was a coaster of some sort. There was a green side (which was facing up) He laughed some more, then told us to flip it to the other side (which was red). He then said THATS HOW THE FOOD STOPS! He was SO tickled! I got so irritated!😡
The food stopped, but, the laughter never did! My GOD! We laughed together and ate very well that night.
The Good times party, a few days later was FIRE! Packed in ALL 3 ROOMS. I was the Only female on the line-up. Even Frankie came! I played twice! It was EVERYTHING!
As a result, I ended up with my 1st professional residency as a DJ at that club. Im SO grateful of ALL the things I was introduced to, and lessons I learned from him that night. Especially the lesson of how to stop the food from coming at a Brazilian Steakhouse 🤣
I've worked with Ron since, Many times. Including becoming Co-Resident at "The Happy Place"
Another Ron Carroll brainchild that gave us space to still join and dance together during the pandemic.
We talked about that night and the dinner when I last saw him. We laughed, So Hard! chopped it up like we always did. He blew me a kiss when he was leaving that night. I was playing at the time, I blew one back, we both indicated that we would call and talk soon....
It would be our last time loving and laughing with each other. That night God called Ron home.
My heart has been shattered. I really Love Ron, even when he was an irritation to me. I guess thats what little brothers do.
Rest well little brother. Thank you for everything 🥹
