Experiencing family trauma or toxic relationships can have a profound impact on both mental and physical health throughout an individual's lifespan. Such traumatic experiences can lead to various issues, including mental health conditions like anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder, as well as physical health issues such as heart disease, chronic lung conditions, autoimmune disorders, and cancer. The effects of these experiences can be long-lasting and may even be intergenerational. Toxic relationships inherently induce stress, activating the body's fight or flight response and releasing stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. Elevated levels of these hormones over time can lead to numerous health issues. Chronic stress also increases blood pressure, disrupts sleep patterns, and can manifest as unexplained physical pain. It is essential to prioritize one's well-being by establishing clear boundaries or, when necessary, estrangement to protect oneself. PMID: 24656576
