When the Stick Shift Disappears, What Else Will We Lose?

Manual transmissions accounted for only 0.6% of new vehicles produced for the U.S. market in 2025, compared with 34.6% in 1980.

For me, those numbers bring back memories of my first car: a 1964 Dodge 330 with manual steering, no radio, hydraulic brakes, and “three on the tree.” My father told me to get in and drive—and eventually, I figured it out.

In this episode of TechMobility Topics, I reflect on that experience and consider whether the death of the stick shift also represents the loss of driver involvement, mechanical understanding, and a once-essential connection between people and their cars.

An Apple engineer took one bad RV trip. Then he built this.

You'd be forgiven for thinking the recreational vehicle industry sat out the electrification wars. It didn't.

The Pebble Flow is an all-electric travel trailer that hitches itself, parks itself from your phone, and runs seven days off-grid on a 45 kWh battery and solar. Inside, it feels less like a camper and more like a boutique hotel — right down to bathroom walls that switch from opaque to transparent.

Founder Bingrui Yang left Apple and Tesla to build it. Three years later, 125 are on the road with more than 250,000 miles between them.
