When the Stick Shift Disappears, What Else Will We Lose?

Manual transmissions accounted for only 0.6% of new vehicles produced for the U.S. market in 2025, compared with 34.6% in 1980.

For me, those numbers bring back memories of my first car: a 1964 Dodge 330 with manual steering, no radio, hydraulic brakes, and “three on the tree.” My father told me to get in and drive—and eventually, I figured it out.

In this episode of TechMobility Topics, I reflect on that experience and consider whether the death of the stick shift also represents the loss of driver involvement, mechanical understanding, and a once-essential connection between people and their cars.

An Apple engineer took one bad RV trip. Then he built this.

You'd be forgiven for thinking the recreational vehicle industry sat out the electrification wars. It didn't.

The Pebble Flow is an all-electric travel trailer that hitches itself, parks itself from your phone, and runs seven days off-grid on a 45 kWh battery and solar. Inside, it feels less like a camper and more like a boutique hotel — right down to bathroom walls that switch from opaque to transparent.

Founder Bingrui Yang left Apple and Tesla to build it. Three years later, 125 are on the road with more than 250,000 miles between them.

Is this the future of camping, or a $139,500 solution to a problem most RVers already learned to live with? 👇

Got a business idea you've never started because life is already full?

You're not lazy, and you're not short on ideas. You're just stuck — waiting for the time, money, or "right moment" that never quite arrives.

I wrote Two-Hour Entrepreneur for exactly that person. It's a step-by-step system for building a real business in just two focused hours a week — no hustle, no burnout, no quitting your job. I built two national companies from Iowa this way, and the book turns my process into a method anyone can follow.

Don't take my word for it — read the first chapter free, then decide:

Are Bots Taking Over the Internet?

What happens when most online activity is no longer human?

Bots reportedly account for 57.5% of web requests, while AI agents are beginning to search, communicate, shop, and take action online. In this episode of TechMobility Topics, I explore how this shift could disrupt advertising, weaken traditional SEO strategies, and force businesses to reconsider who—or what—they are trying to reach.

If machines now represent the internet’s majority audience, the online economy may be heading for a fundamental reset.

Who's Really Deciding Government Benefits? Increasingly, It May Be AI.

Artificial intelligence is increasingly being used to help determine eligibility for government benefits, healthcare, housing, and food assistance. A new report from TechTonic Justice raises concerns that many of these automated systems prioritize efficiency over access while providing little transparency into how decisions are made. In this episode, we explore what the findings could mean for millions of Americans and why accountability must keep pace with the growing use of AI in public services.
