When my school announced prom, I wasn’t really excited about it. But then I looked over at my great-grandma, Alma, sitting in her recliner, watching an old black-and-white movie.
“You ever go to prom?” I asked her.
She chuckled. “Honey, back in my day, girls like me didn’t get asked to prom.”
That stuck with me. Alma had been through so much—raised four kids, lost my great-grandpa too soon, and still managed to be the funniest, toughest woman I knew. So I made up my mind right then.
I was taking my great-grandma to prom.
At first, she thought I was kidding. “What would I even wear?” she asked, raising an eyebrow.
“Something fabulous,” I said with a grin.
A week later, she had a sparkly blue dress, and I had a matching tie. When we walked into the venue, all eyes turned to us. I expected some awkward stares or quiet whispers. But instead, people started clapping. My friends cheered. Even the principal wiped away a tear.

I (46M) remarried five years ago. I have a daughter, Emily (18), and my wife Tanya has a daughter, Zoe (17). The girls never clicked, but I treated them both fairly—including saving for their futures.
Emily recently got limited access to her college fund. We've always been clear: college only. So when I saw $10K missing, I nearly fainted.
I asked Emily. She cried and whispered, "It was Zoe. Tanya told me not to say anything."
I confronted my wife.
Her? Smug as ever:
"Yeah, I told Zoe she could use it. What's the big deal?"
"You stole from Emily's college fund!"
