My dad walked into the kitchen this morning, took one look at the green cabinets, and said, "Well, that's certainly a choice." Thanks for the support, Dad.
I knew this color would be divisive when I picked it up. The paint chip looked so sophisticated in the store - this gorgeous sage green that reminded me of old farmhouses and herb gardens. But standing in my actual kitchen with a brush in my hand, I started second-guessing everything.
The beige cabinets were perfectly fine. Safe. Boring as watching paint dry, but fine. They came with the house and blended into the background like furniture you forget you own. But after two years of staring at them, I was ready for something that actually had personality.
The transformation took a whole weekend. Removing all the cabinet doors, sanding, priming, painting two coats, then switching out the old backsplash for crisp white subway tile. My back was killing me by Sunday night, but seeing it all come together was worth every ache.
I posted the before and after in a home renovation group on the Tedooo app where I sell my custom painted furniture pieces. The response was split exactly like I expected - people either loved the bold choice or thought I had ruined a perfectly good kitchen. But the ones who loved it really loved it, asking for paint color details and tips for their own cabinet makeovers.
Dad's opinion aside, I wake up every morning and smile when I walk into this kitchen. It feels like mine now instead of just some generic space that came with the mortgage. Sometimes taking a risk on color is exactly what a room needs to feel alive.
Even if your dad thinks you've lost your mind.
