Big thanks to WZRD Chicago 88.3 FM for continuing to play my track "What Can I Do?" to celebrate July 4th. This song, composed by friends Wayne Green & Brian Potter has become my personal anthem.

WHAT CAN I DO? (Wayne Green/Brian Potter)

What can I do, America,
to make you proud you gave me birth.
How can I live, America,
live for the dream of peace on earth.
I'll dedicate my life and love,
and from now on let this be true,
I'll be the one to say America each day,
what can I do for you?

What can I do for just one friend,
to touch their heart and make them see that
There is a sun above the clouds,
waiting to shine eternally.
I'll dedicate my life and love,
and from now on let this be true
I'll be the one to say to every friend each day,
what can I do for you?

I'll do my best to write a brand new story with my life
Although the pages may be stained with tears
And when I rest if they say there was glory in my life
It's because I asked this question,
over and over I asked this question
Everyday, through all my years.

What can I do to change the world,
to make it better than before
Home of the brave, land of the free,
give me a chance, I ask no more
I'll dedicate my life and love,
and from now on let this be true
I'll be the one to say America each day,
what can I do, what can I do,
what can I do for you?

Rose Mallett, a talented singer, actress, and songwriter, shared her musical journey beginning with a pivotal moment in the 4th grade, when she was first encouraged to sing. This early encouragement set her on a path that would lead to collaborations with notable figures in the music industry, including Hal Davis, who had her record demo tracks of his songs intended for legendary artists such as Diana Ross.

She honed her craft under the guidance of Phil Moore, the same vocal coach who trained Dorothy Dandridge. Mallett emphasized the discipline in her process, often writing a song as many as five times before performing it. She also takes the time to create a back story for each new song, allowing her to emotionally connect with the music and deliver a more authentic performance.

Among her recorded works are two albums: Building Dreams and Dreams Realized. The latter achieved notable success on radio stations throughout the United States, earning positions on the Roots Music Report, NACC, and JazzWeek charts. These albums reflect her growth as both a vocalist and songwriter, showcasing her distinctive voice and storytelling ability.

Her talent and professionalism led to a long-standing engagement at the Purple Room in Palm Springs, California. What began as a last-minute emergency replacement gig turned into a beloved twelve-year residency and counting. Rose also holds a second weekly jazz residency at Vicky’s in Palm Springs. Among her many achievements is her touring show, SONGS OF SARAH, a tribute to jazz icon Sarah Vaughan. Mallett undertook extensive research into Vaughan’s life and music to develop the show, discovering numerous parallels between their lives and careers. Her portrayal has garnered four awards from the Desert Theater League in Palm Springs, CA. In 2016, she was declared a “Living Jazz Legend” at Los Angeles City Hall.

This evening, June 19, 2025, at 7:30 PM, Rose Mallett brings SONGS OF SARAH to the Epiphany Center for the Arts, located at 201 S Ashland Ave, Chicago, IL 60607. The performance is a one-woman theatrical tribute to Sarah Vaughan’s journey into music as a child and her early career. A Chicago native herself, Mallett channels the essence of Vaughan’s vocal delivery, blending it with the joy and playfulness of Ella Fitzgerald, the haunting pain of Billie Holiday, and the regal presence of Lena Horne. Her voice is simply beautiful—don’t miss this unforgettable evening of jazz history and heartfelt performance.
