❄️ 10 Winter RV Camping Tips That Saved Our Sanity
When people find out we spent an entire year living and working in beautiful South Lake Tahoe, the first thing they always ask us is… how was the winter? ❄️
Here’s what we learned after months of snow and freezing temps:
1️⃣ Heated Water Hose is Non-Negotiable
If you're using a regular hose, you're basically signing up for frozen regret and unexpected repairs. At minimum, fill your fresh tank and disconnect. But honestly? Just get the heated hose. And never leave your rig with the water on—ask us how we know 😅
2️⃣ Skirt That Rig (At Least a Little)
You don’t have to go full DIY mode. We just skirted our slide-outs with foam board from the hardware store—and it made a huge difference.
3️⃣ Run a Dehumidifier
Snow outside = condensation inside. Keep windows clear, walls dry, and your RV smelling less like a locker room.
4️⃣ Drafts Are the Enemy
Reflectix, window shrink-wrap, vent insulators, and thermal curtains are your winter defense squad. Stop the drafts, keep the cozy.
5️⃣ Back Up Heat
Your furnace is great—until it guzzles propane like a campfire guzzles your marshmallows. We used a diesel heater + space heater combo and stayed at a toasty 75°F. Bonus: diesel is way easier to find in mountain towns.
6️⃣ All-Season RV? Huge Help.
If your rig has a sealed underbelly and heated tanks, your plumbing has a fighting chance. This setup saved us more times than we can count.
7️⃣ Heat That Doesn’t Need Power
Power outages happen. Mr. Buddy heaters, hand warmers, and fluffy blankets are your cold-weather MVPs.
8️⃣ Stop the Slip-N-Slides
Snowy steps = ER trips waiting to happen. Hold the handrail, add non-slip covers, and sprinkle pet-safe salt. Trust us—you don’t want a winter wipeout.
9️⃣ Protect Your Batteries
Cold drains battery life fast. Use a trickle charger, insulate your battery bay, and keep backups on hand.
🔟 Full Hookups or Bust
15°F, snow blowing sideways, and no hookups? That’s a hard no. Find a full-hookup site and spare yourself the rationing nightmare.
🎯 Bonus Tip:
Bring your patience. Stuff will freeze. Something will break. But those quiet, snowy mornings with mountain views? 1000% worth it.
