Trump ran on a mandate for mass deportations. And his supporters, many of them who claim to be Christian, cheered. And I have to ask: have we read the same Bible?
Because here's what that mandate is actually producing: For every six immigrants ICE removes from the workforce, one American worker loses their job. The jobs aren't being "freed up" for Americans. They're literally just ... gone.
And while that's happening, detainees are dying by su***de in ICE facilities at an all-time record pace. 10 su***des (part of over 51 total deaths) since January 2025. Historically, ICE recorded one, sometimes even zero, per year. Staff are ignoring their screams, ignoring their hallucinations, failing to get help to people who were begging for it.
At Delaney Hall in Newark, about 300 detainees are now on day six of a hunger and labor strike. They aren't striking for better conditions. 300 people are starving themselves just to be heard.
These are human beings made in the image of God, dying alone in detention cells while guards are purposefully looking the other way. While the prison companies who own the detention center are making billions.
So can we just stop with the border security rhetoric, because this isn't that, and you know it. And this isn't protecting American workers either. This is cruelty plain and simple. Institutionalized, taxpayer-funded cruelty, wrapped up in a flag and a cross and called a mandate.
"Whatever you did to the least of these, you did to me." — Matthew 25
A detention facility in New Jersey has become the latest site of clashes between ICE and protesters as detainees stage a hunger strike.
