So many ways that Josh Gerth and the Victim Players could have sung a tune in the key of TIF. Keeping Tax Increment Financing (TIF) dollars in the township, especially a general township-wide TIF, should be a priority. Instead, they spent over $3M on decorating a highway interchange in Cincinnati.
Take a look at the top 10 list of ways that money could've been spent. 4 and 9 are BANGERS! But they all would have been better use of money.
Anderson Township Trustees have not been forthcoming about how the 3.2 million in landscaping could have been used IN ANDERSON instead saying the money had to be spent on landscaping. This is inaccurate, the 1994 TIF money (which comes from OUR tax dollars) could have been used to.
1. Help purchase Coney (which was purchased by the CSO in 2024 for 8 million)
2. Help the parks purchase additional land at Beech Acres which cost 6.3 million. This would lower the parks levy tax burden for Anderson Residents.
3. Build a sidewalk from Foxbrook Place to Five Mile Road, which would finish the connection of the eastern half of the township to the Five Mile Trail.
4. Help build an outdoor community pool at Beech Acres.
5. Build a Riverwalk alongside the Ohio River in Anderson
6. Bury utility lines on Beechmont
7. Build more Pickleball Courts
8. Improve the Kellogg park/ Dog Park
9. Make bike lane improvements
10. Purchase fire engines, ambulances, police cruisers, trucks, and snowplows
All of these improvements would be possible because Money from the 1994 TIF in Anderson Township can be used for public infrastructure, quality-of-life amenities, and economic development within the township, but not for general operating expenses.
Eligible uses for 1994 TIF funds
Quality-of-life amenities: This includes the development and maintenance of trails like the Anderson Trails network and Five Mile Trail, as well as the Anderson Center and Anderson Lake.
Public infrastructure: Funds can be used for improvements to buildings and grounds built or acquired with the TIF dollars and for roadway paving work.
Economic development: The TIF can be used to further economic development within the township.
Public safety equipment: A portion of the funds is used to purchase equipment for public safety, which helps extend the life of existing levies. This includes fire engines, ambulances, and police cruisers.
Recreation facilities: The 1994 TIF was used to purchase the Beech Acres RecPlex, an indoor recreation facility for the community.
Capital improvements: The funds are used for public improvements within the township, such as those on Beechmont Avenue.
What the funds cannot be used for
Salaries: The money from the TIF cannot be used to pay salaries or cover other operating expenses.
General Fund: TIF funds are restricted for specific uses and cannot be used for general discretionary spending that the Township's General Fund permits.
